The Psychiatrist Is In: Sox Lose 4th Straight

May 18 vs. Houston Astros

Toon Squad Update:
Lucy from the Peanuts
Psychiatric Help, 5 cents - The Doctor is In

Short Take:  Mat Latos continues his return to earth as Astros rack up hits, beat Sox 5-3

Hope you have your 5 cents for Lucy’s Psychiatric Help booth ready, Sox fans. We might need some therapy after the Sox lost their 4th straight game tonight.

Mat Latos’ last two starts have been troubling after a promising beginning to the season. Today, the Astros had him pretty well pegged, and he lasted 5.1 innings, giving up 5 earned runs, 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

On top of that, after a shaky 1st inning, Doug Fister was tough with his moving fastball and dropping his curve in the strike zone. The Sox managed 2 earned runs and 8 hits in 6 innings off Fister, but they couldn’t string enough together to overcome Latos’ ineffective performance.

There was one bright spot in this game: when Sox reliever Dan Jennings walked the first 2 ‘Stros in the top of the 8th, the defense took lemons and made lemonade (and I’ll have a Mike’s Hard, please). George Springer grounded hard to Todd Frazier at 3rd. The Toddfather stepped on 3rd, fired to Brett Lawrie at 2nd, who fired to Jose Abreu at 1st. That was the White Sox’s second triple play of 2016.

But no late inning heroics were to be had today. Astros closer Gregerson shut down the Sox in order in bottom of the 9th, and the Sox conceded the series to the Astros with this loss.

Fortunately, all is not lost – the Sox got off to a strong start this season and have some cushion for downturns like this. I’m thrilled that I’m not spending another May watching the Sox scuffle at the bottom of the division and listening to the “it’s early” excuse.

Of note:

  • Jose Abreu had two of the game’s 3 RBIs; Melky Cabrera had the other, with a standup triple.
  • My son and a group of his friends attended this game as part of his bachelor party. Hey Andy: I wish the Sox could have pulled off the win – but getting to see a triple play is pretty dang cool. To Andy’s friends who accompanied him tonight: Thanks for taking him to the Cell. I know very well that a good many of you are Cubs fans, and I’m sure you’d rather have been at a Cubs game. Now THAT’s a sign of true friendship! (And oh, yeah…did Andy tell you his fiancée and her family are Cardinals fans? :) )

The Sox host the Astros tomorrow night at 7:10; Chris Sale faces Collin McHugh.
