Mess in Texas

May 10th, 2016 at Texas Rangers

Toon Squad Update:
Charlie Brown
Lucy Takes Football Away From Poor Charlie Brown at Last Minute

Short Take: † Gassed Sox Bullpen melts down in 8th and blows 5 run lead.

Throughout the course of a 162 game season, you're going to have some games where defeat is snatched from the jaws of victory. Fortunately for Sox fans, it has been a while since a game like this got away. The loss was punctuated by a rare Sox bullpen meltdown in the bottom of the 8th inning as the Sox fell to the Rangers 13-11.

For the second night in row, the White Sox would strike immediately in the first inning. Adam Eaton opened the game with a single the opposite way off of Rangers starter Derek Holland. The Sox would manage to get Eaton to 3rd on back to back singles from Rollins and Abreu. The Rangers conceded the run on Todd Frazier's infield grounder but Holland managed to stop the early rally there. However, the Rangers would immediately strike back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles from Beltre and Rua as Carlos Rodon struggled to find his command. The game would be put on ice for about 1hr 15 minutes while the rains came pouring down in Arlington. The Sox only visit Arlington once per year but it feels like there is always one big thunderstorm every time they visit. The dark clouds would prove to be foreshadowing to what awaited the Sox at the end of this one.

The game resumed in the top of the 3rd and Sox hitters were not bothered by the delay at all. Adam Eaton would once again be the "straw that stirs the drink" by getting things going with a 1 out single. Jimmy Rollins continued his good night by splitting the gap for a double. Abreu worked a walk which loaded the bases. Todd Frazier would once again come through in the clutch with a soft single to right center plating 2 runs. The Sox were not done. Melky Cabrera lined a double into the RF corner scoring another run. Brett Lawrie would tack on another RBI "double" after the Rangers defense couldln't handle his sky high pop up in the blistering Texas wind which made the game 5-2 Sox.

Rodon would pick his struggles up where he left off and give the lead right back to Texas with a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 3rd from Rangers catcher Bryan Holaday. However, the Sox offense once again went to work in the Top of the 4th in a flurry of walks from the Texas Rangers bullpen. 2 RBI walks from Rollins and Melky Cabrera made it 7-5 Sox. The red hot Avisail Garcia would continue his rampage and clear the bases with an RBI triple putting the game at 10-5. A Jimmy Rollins triple in the top of the 8th followed by an RBI sac fly from Abreu made it 11-5.

Carlos Rodon struggled with his command all night coupled with a lenghty rain delay. However, he managed to gut out 6 2/3 innings on a night when he absolutely needed to go deep into the game. Unfortunately, the 10 outs the bullpen needed to cover didn't come to pass.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Sox had arguably their worst pitched inning of 2016. The Rangers have a "quick strike offense" and strike they did on White Sox long man Scott Carroll who had the misfortune of being the only reliever who wasn't used in Monday's extra inning affair. Carroll quickly loaded the bases with nobody out and things got worse from there. Robin had to go to gassed bullpen options to clean up Scott Carroll's mess. Zach Duke retired 1 of his 2 batters but the Rangers climbed uncomfortably closer. Albers was brought on to face Ian Desmond who greeted Matt Albers with a bases clearing triple making it 11-10 Sox. The misery was not over for the White Sox. After the "uninentional intentional walk" to Prince Fielder, the suddenly laboring Matt Albers followed that up by giving up a 3 run bomb to CF by Ryan Rua. The Rangers came all the way back and scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 13-11 lead. Tolleson would notch the save and the Sox got completely ambushed at the end of this one. This is the second time in a week where the Rangers scored 7 runs against an opposing bullpen.

Many Sox fans were frustrated with Robin's bullpen management but this time, I can't fault him. The bullpen is completely taxed because of a close game Sunday against Minnesota and an extra inning affair on Monday. As a long man, Scott Carroll needed to be able to eat innings tonight and protect a comfortable 5 run lead. He didn't get the job done and opened the door for a potent Rangers offense to kick down. My frustration lies with Carroll tonight. This loss really stung especially since the Indians won earlier in the evening. The Sox had been making everything look so easy, a game like this pops up and lets everyone know that winning this division is not going to be given to us. The Rangers are defending AL West champions for a reason. As Sox GM Rick Hahn was quoted earlier in the week, "The American League is no joke". The beauty of baseball is that you have to forget this dumpster fire of a ballgame and win tomorrow. Mat Latos takes the bump against Cole Hamels and the Rangers in the rubber match on Wednesday afternoon.

Game Notes-

-Jimmy Rollins went 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored.

-Avi Garcia is hitting .455 in the last 14 games

-Abreu hit what appeared to be 2 HRs in this game that hurricane type winds knocked down at the top of the fences.

-The Sox had 7 walks total in this game.

WSI's
That's all folks:
†Flush this game and get back after it tomorrow.
