So Much for a Perfect Year

April 6 at Oakland

Toon Squad Update:
Well-liked, but not as much as her better counterpart.

Short Take:   Carlos Rodon is on the wrong end of a pitching duel as the White Sox suffer their first loss of the season.

There was a feeling that by not seeing Sonny Gray for two straight days, the White Sox were only delaying the inevitability of the Oakland Athletics' ace holding their bats in check. Gray finally got his chance on Wednesday against Carlos Rodon. While the Pale Hose's top rookie from last year proved a worthy adversary, he couldn't match Gray and the Sox lost 2-1, their first defeat of 2016.

Rodon struck out six and walked just one over seven innings, but he got off to a shaky start that proved to be the difference. Billy Burns and Khris Davis hit back-to-back singles right out of the gate and Jed Lowrie brought home Burns on a sacrifice fly. One inning later, Mark Canha hit what appeared to be a "can of corn" to Hawk Harrelson, though it actually landed in the right field seats instead. Every A's threat that came after was shut down, albeit too late.

Gray's lone blemish came in the third amid a seven-inning, five-strikeout performance. Austin Jackson led off with a ground-rule double, advanced to third on Adam Eaton's groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Rollins. Efforts to get to Oakland's bullpen in the eighth and ninth proved futle as the Sox left runners on in each of those frames. Those resulted in John Axford's first hold of the season and Ryan Madson's first save.

The first loss of the year showed if they're going down, the Sox will do it swinging. The strong pitching is there for the most part and the offense is presenting opportunities. Everyone just needs to come through in the clutch. Otherwise, this season won't be any different from the past three years.

The Sox will finish up their lone series in the Bay Area this year Thursday afternoon. Mat Latos will get his first start in a Sox uniform against Kendall Graveman. A good outing from Latos would show the Sox don't need Miguel Gonzalez to come up just yet. Game time is 2:35.

That's all folks:
Rodon played Veronica to Gray's Trixie Tang. Perhaps he'll be just as great and popular someday.

Adam Eaton

A pair of hits proved he's swinging a bat these first few games. Too bad he can't single-handedly carry a team.
