Sox kick A's in Oakland to start 2016

April 4, 2016, at Oakland Athletics

Toon Squad Update:
Mr. Natural
Keep on trucking, it's better than sucking like the last few years.

Short Take: Sale was good enough, and one opportunistic inning was all the offense that he and the pen needed.

Our Sox topped the A's 4-3 in both team's season opener. Scheduled A's starter Sonny Gray couldn't answer the bell due to tummy rumbles. Naturally, though, the Sox had some troubling portents of their own to begin the game: After getting HBP, Eaton was picked off with Abreu at bat in the first. Then Abreu himself got HBP as Hawk was saying Jose finally has someone decent hitting behind him. So naturally Frazier whiffed. A couple of innings later, Hawk opined that Rich Hill "is the kind of lefty who gives us trouble," which is a natural fact. It started to smell like the same old Sox.

But then...Hill hit a wall in the fourth, starting with his own errant pickoff throw that let Austin Jackson ramble all the way from first to third, after which Eaton hit a SAC fly that the CF played into a triple, then Rollins singled him in, and Abreu doubled. Frazier fanned again, this time on a hung slider. Cabrerra grounded out to end the two-run inning, except Sox cast-off Marcus Semien sidearmed his throw wide of the bag, Rollins and Abreu scoring the third and fourth runs. Nice to see our opponents implode for a change.

Sale promptly gave back three of them. At times he was throwing, not pitching. If I could bring 98mph heat, I'd occasionally forget to pitch, too. Our ace then settled down to ultimately whip the A's's asses. (Hey, the possessive of Sox is Sox's, so...) Nate Jones closed the door on their last rally in the 8th before an uneventful 9th, with David Robertson getting save #1 of what we hope will be many.

WSI's That's all folks: Mr. Natural may be Crumby, but so far the Sox are not.
