Danks Loses KC Magic

October 1, 2015 vs. Kansas City Royals

Sox Project Update:
Struggling Project
Additional Materials Needed Next Year

Short Take:  Abreu makes history but Johnny Danks loses magic touch against Royals. Sox fall in series finale 6-4.

Throughout his career Johnny Danks has possessed a certain mastery over the Kansas City Royals. He entered play Thursday night with a 10W-1L career record and an E.R.A. near 2.30 against the defending AL champions. Even after Danks lost his velocity due to shoulder surgery, his dominance over KC continued. The Royals ulimately were up to the challenge of taking out their nemesis scoring 6 runs and chasing Danks relatively early in this one. This game had meaning for the Royals as they were looking to take the series finale and maintain home field advantage in the playoffs. The Sox would make a game of it in the middle innings but would end up falling to their division rivals 6-4.

The Royals wasted no time in this one getting on the board immediately in the top of the 1st. Alcides Escobar would open the game with a perfect bunt down the 3B line. Tyler Flowers made an ill advised throw which ended up in foul territory allowing Escobar to move into 2B. Moustakas would drive him home with a solid opposite field single giving KC a 1-0 lead.

The Royals would really bust the game open in the top half of the 3rd. Eric Hosmer laced a 1 out triple into the corner followed by a walk to Kendrys Morales. This brought Moustakas again to the plate in a position to do damage with another RBI single which opened a 2-0 KC lead. Former Red Sox World Series hero Jonny Gomes followed that up with a well struck single into CF that plated Morales and Moustakas and suddenly it was a 4-0 deficit.

The Sox climbed back in the game in the bottom of the 3rd with barely a hard hit ball. Adam Eaton lead off with a walk and Jose Abreu would follow that with a blooper that fell in front of Gomes who had been playing deep. With 1 out, Trayce Thompson hit a high fly ball into shallow RF but the nasty wind caused Zobrist to misjudge the ball and it fell for an RBI gork shot single. The poor KC defense continued as a tailor made double play ball off the bat of Alexei Ramirez went through the wickets allowing another Sox run to score cutting the lead to 4-2. It's very unlike the Royals to be charitable on defense but even the best have bad days.

KC went for the knockout blow to Johnny in the 5th inning scoring another pair of runs off an RBI single and a Gomes sac fly extending the KC lead to 6-2. It just wasn't Johnny's night as he didn't have very good command of any of his pitches. It's not shocking to see Danks have a poor start but given his career success against KC, it was a more of a surprise than usual.

By far the biggest highlight for the Sox came in the bottom of the 7th as Jose Abreu walked into the history books with a 2 RBI single to LF that scored Adam Eaton and Tyler Flowers. This gave Jose his 100th and 101st RBI of the year and cut the KC lead to 6-4. Abreu gave a slight fist pump and a smile when he reached 1B knowing he just hit a milestone. Jose Abreu became just the second player in MLB history to have 30HRs and 100RBIs in his first two seasons. The only other player to achieve this accomplishment was Albert Pujols. So much for the sophomore slump nonsense that was discussed prior to this season. The South Siders will enter 2016 with the same problem they had heading into this season and that is to find someone...anyone...who can give adequate protection to Abreu in the lineup.

Unfortunately, the Sox offense couldn't muster anything more after Abreu's milestone. The bullpen would hold KC in check for 4 innings to no avail as the Sox would fall in the series finale 6-4. The Sox will play their final series of 2015 beginning tomorrow night against the Detroit Tigers with Chris Sale looking to break a franchise strikeout record that has stood for over 100 years.

Game Notes:

-Jose Abreu became only the 2nd player to open his first two MLB seasons with 30HRs and 100RBI.

-Trayce Thompson finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. He is hitting .310 since being called up.

-The Sox finished 7W-11L vs. KC Royals in 2015.

-Alexei Ramirez made 2 outs on the bases tonight. One on a straight steal and once trying to score on a wild pitch.

-Prior to the game, Danks spelled out his grandmother's name on the back of the pitching mound in tribute. She had passed away earlier this week.

Abreu is a cornerstone to build around.
