Samardzija Is Royally Better

September 29 vs. Kansas City Royals

Sox Project Update:
A glimpse of what could have been?
And against the division winner, too. Sigh.

Short Take:  Shark is sharp, Sox defense saves some skin, and Adam Eaton's lumber company pitches in to beat the Royals 4-2.

In one of few White Sox highlights of this season, tonight our White Sox were better than the 2015 AL Central Division champions. Sure, the Sox had knocked around Royals starter Johnny Cueto the last time they faced him; but the Royals had also been a, er, royal pain in Sox starter Jeff Samardzija's behind.

Tonight, Samardzija was much more the pitcher we'd hoped for this season, for the second start in a row. He pitched 7 innings, gave up 8 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 strikeouts and no walks, and with a little help from his friends, he got the win as the Sox defeated the Royals 4-2.

The Sox got on the board in the 3rd inning. After two outs, Carlos Sanchez walked, Adam Eaton singled, and then Jose Abreu tallied his 98th RBI of the season with a single up the middle.

The Sox extended the lead to 3-0 in the 5th. Sanchez singled and Eaton followed with his 14th home run of the season. No, that's not a typo: Adam Eaton has fourteen (14) home runs this season. Yes, I know the guy had hit 6 homers in his entire career before this. He has more homers than Avisail Garcia, Tyler Flowers, Melky Cabrera, and Adam LaRoche….Who'da thunk it?

Samardzija shut the Royals down until the 6th, when KC got on the board with back-to-back longballs. Eric Hosmer drove a high fastball into the left field bullpen, immediately followed by Kendrys Morales sending another fastball into the left center field bleachers.

Fortunately for Shark, Trayce Thompson was playing left field tonight instead of Melky Cabrera. In the 7th, Thompson made a SPECTACULAR, full-layout, reel-highlight catch of a Ben Zobrist liner that probably would have gone to the outfield wall and scored the tying run. So Samardzija departed the game after the 7th with a 3-2 lead.

And good Sox defense also saved Zack Duke's skin, after the Royals threatened in the 8th and Duke was brought in to get one out. Duke walked the guy he was supposed to get out (Morales), then went 2-0 to Mike Moustakas with runners on 1st and 2nd. Moustakas hit a frozen rope that third baseman Mike Olt snagged in a dive, possibly preventing the tying run from scoring.

The Sox tacked on one more run in the 8th when Alexei Ramirez doubled in Trayce Thompson. With a 4-2 lead, Dave Robertson closed out the game with 3 quick outs.

And so the Sox quietly kicked off the last homestand of this rotten 2015 season with their 74th. And this win put the Sox over last season's win total. Um, yay?

Tomorrow, the Sox face Kansas City at 7:10 pm CST. Jose Quintana gets the start against Edinson Volquez.

Rebuilding Recap:
At least they're "better" than last year, although that's not a major accomplishment.
