Attack of the Sponge Cake!

September 11 Vs. Twinkies

Sox Project Update:
Support beams have a gooey center
Project is pretty much done for the season. All work now is simply to pay the workers. No progress is being made.

Short Take: One of these teams is pastry with a creamy center. It's not the one from Minnesota.

ZZZZZZZZZ... huh? What? WHAT?!?!? You really want to read a recap of that game... Sigh... okay... well it wasn't a great night, but Eric Johnson pitched okay against a team playing for a playoff berth. Unfortunately he only managed 5 innings and was wild using 113 pitches to do it. On the other side of the coin, the Sox managed 6 hits with only Mike Olt managing more than one. The bullpen came on and gave up more runs especially late and the Sox went on to lose 6-2.

As mentioned, Sox starter Erik Johnson only gave up one run, but was lucky to do so. He gave up four hits and five walks in his brief, pitch-heavy outing. He allowed base-runners in every inning except for the second and loaded the bases in the first before getting the final batter to line out to right. Like I said, he got lucky. Johnson actually left with a 2-1 lead but the Twinkies kept chipping away until busting things open in the ninth as the offense decided two runs was enough and sleep-walked through the first four and final four innings.

Ah, but what a glorious 5th inning it was. Well for Adam Eaton it was. Mike Olt managed to reach base for the second time on the night. Then after Micah Johnson struck out Eaton delivers the big blow to briefly give the Sox the lead. Unfortunately that was two of the Sox six hits on the night. The Sox actually managed to group the few hits they had well and had multiple base-runners in both the third and fourth innings. In both of them poor base running decisions cost them outs and runs. In the third Mike Olt singled but was out trying to stretch it to a double. That proved to be costly when Micah Johnson followed with a double of his own. Then in the fourth with men on first and second Brently - who had a nice night at the plate going 2-2 with a walk and a run scored - singled. Unfortunately Avisail Garcia was thrown out at home on the play. After that came the "glorious fifth" and the Sox had their brief lead but then the offense went cold managing only one meager walk over the final 4 innings.

Maybe this game is different if those two potential lost runs score. The Sox would have been pitching Duke and Robertson in the 8th and 9th instead of Jones and Putnam. But that's one for smarter minds than mine to analyze. Maybe the Sox were just going to lose this game no matter what. Given it's the Twinkies who have absolutely pwned our boys this year that feels like more likely, but who knows? Kind of the motto of the season I suppose. If things had been slightly different who knows what might have happened. Unfortunately we have to live in reality and reality says this team is toast and getting crispier, but now "improved" with a gooey center. Sox and Twinkies are back at it on Saturday. Game time is 6:10 in Chicago and the starters are Milone and Quintana. Maybe the Sox can finally wake up and beat this group of perpetual losers. Just don't hold your breath, you might choke on the spongecake...

Rebuilding Recap:
Parts of the project will have to be torn down this offseason, but some parts appear to be solidly build and will last for years.
