WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Spanked by the Yankees!

July 31 Vs Yankees

Sox Project Update:
Staying the course
Project hit a speed bump the last few days. It will take a bit longer than the last week's progress seemed to imply.

Short Take:  When the pitcher is batting it's not normally a good thing in the AL, when that pitcher is also the starting DH this goes double...

Just when it seemed the Sox were turning around this less than spectacular season they run into an offensive juggernaut that has been absolutely crushing the ball the last few weeks. Damned Yankees! The Sox never really stood a chance in this game. Rodon wasn't sharp and his problems pitching from the stretch returned. He's still a work in progress and will have ups and downs like this, but it still stings after such a great week to lose 13-6 to the gold-plated jet-setters from New York.

This game was brief, brutal, ugly, then over. Rodon took the mound against a white hot Yankee offense that has been absolutely pounding the ball the last few weeks. With three players posting an OPS over .900, another over .800 and a team OPS of .766 they are second in MLB in runs to Toronto and tonight it was all on display. Rodon never really settled in before it was 1-0. Then he gave up another run in the second before allowing Mark Teixeira to launch a grand slam and pretty much seal the outcome. Rodon stayed in the game for another inning plus and actually managed a scoreless 3rd before giving up another run on a double and a pair of wild pitches before walking ARoid and getting yanked. Albers came on and promptly gave up another 2-run jack to Teixeira to make the score 9-2 and erase any lingering hope Sox fans might have of a comeback. By the end of the inning it was 11-2 and anyone who was still had the game on must have been dozing on the couch and unable to change the channel.

Meanwhile on offense the Sox had a solid night though many of the runs came after the game was well out of reach. Jose Abreu hit another 2-run shot in the third for a brief glimmer of hope but all the rest were scored after the game was dead and it's remains were burned, powdered, buried and the ground had been thoroughly salted. Eaton continued his hot streak reaching base three more times stealing a base and scoring another run. Really the main offensive bright spot was Adam LaRoche who managed to go 4-5 with a double and a 9th inning RBI. Of course none of that is why Adam will be remembered for this game.

If you missed the synopsis posted above, yes Adam LaRoche pitched a scoreless 9th inning and even managed to record a strikeout with a sneaky 85-MPH fastball after throwing enough pure slow junk to make Charlie Hough envious. It provided a brief moment of comedy to enliven the team and release some tension from an otherwise dismal evening, and there's nothing wrong with that when a team that has been hot gets shellacked like the Sox did tonight. Saturday's another day and hopefully the team can bounce back and get a win. Maybe LaRoche's success throwing slow stuff will work in John Danks favor as he takes the mound for our rejuvenated squad. At least they're finally scoring some runs. Hopefully that trend continues. Game time is at 6:10 in Chicago and the teams remain the same.

Rebuilding Recap:
After a great week of progress the future seems brighter regardless of this particular outcome.
