Putting the "0" in Oriole

July 3 Vs. Baltimore

Sox Project Update:
Third straight day of progress
The crew continues to dig out and repair the damage from the 8-day storm that ripped through the project a few weeks back.

Short Take:  John Danks stuns the Orioles and Sox fans and Jose Abreu brings the big stick for an unexpected outcome.

Well that was unexpected. John Danks versus Ubaldo Jimenez wasn't a match-up that instilled confidence in most Sox fans and rightfully so. Jimenez has been tough to hit this year and Danks has been up and down but mostly down this season. The Sox didn't manage to do much against Jimenez as expected, but Danks managed to turn back the clock 4 years and completely baffled the Orioles for the 7-innings he pitched and the Sox went on to win 1-0 and yes you read that right.

The Sox actually had a decent crowd tonight with 27,000+ showing up to root for our last place and struggling team. Even after the last few successful outings the Sox remain buried in last in the American League with 35 wins though tonight's win puts them percentage points ahead of the equally struggling Oakland A's at the time of this writing. I imagine most of the people were just looking for some mid-summer fun on a long holiday weekend. Certainly not many were expecting John Danks to perform like he did and with Baltimore starting Ubaldo Jimenez you could be forgiven if were mostly there for the fireworks, atmosphere and food. But, John Danks had other ideas. Using a mixture of off-speed pitches and curve-balls he had the Oriole hitters guessing all night long. Most of their hits were soft bloopers. Only 3 runners reached second all night and only one of them got all the way to third. That required a wild pitch that really could have been smothered, but Danks pitched out of that thread in the 7th inducing a strikeout and easy fly-out to end the inning.

Offensively the Sox were as punchless as they've looked at times this year with no one doing much and even a few squandered opportunities early on, but in the fourth, Jose Abreu knocked one just over the right field fence for a solo homer and that proved all the Sox would need. In fact the Sox only sent 31 men to the plate tonight - not using their final three outs in the process, but it didn't seem to matter because when Danks exited after seven Jake Petricka came on and retired the Orioles 1-2-3 in the 8th with no drama at all and then David Robertson came on and struck out the side in the 9th for his 17th save. Love me some no-drama bullpen work to preserve one-run leads but I assume everyone feels that way.

So in the end the Sox go on to win 1-0 with our old broken down ex-ace bettering a guy having an ace-like season for our opponents. Hopefully John can continue to use that curve to similar effect in coming games, but for at least one night he looked like the guy who signed a mid-8-figure contract a few years ago and there's nothing wrong with that. For the fans who came for fireworks, they got some during the game and after and there's nothing wrong with extra fireworks at a Sox game. Game two of this set is tomorrow at 4:10 local time with Jeff "Shark" Samardzija facing off against Chris Tillman. Can the Sox make it 4 in a row on July 4th? Tune in and find out and whatever you do, have safe, fun and relaxing holiday. Happy 4th of July everybody!

Rebuilding Recap:
Lot of work left to do to build something lasting but at least they stopped digging that hole the last few days.
