Basebrawl

April 23 vs. Kansas City

Sox Project Update:
Framework has some cracks
What the Sox have built on recently cracked a bit under pressure of a brawl.

Short Take:   Benches clear over stupidity as Sox fall

The White Sox and the Royals started this series off on an interesting note. A benches-clearing brawl erupted at the end of the 7th, leading to five ejections. So the 3-2 loss in 13 innings isn't really the story.

Chris Sale started tonight, and he was a bit shaky in the first, allowing two runs. But he settled down and was relatively solid through the remainder of the seven innings he pitched. And for the most part, the bullpen was solid. Unfortunately, Jake Petricka picked up the loss by allowing a run in the 13th on two hits. The Sox scored their runs in the fourth and the fifth. In the fourth, Avisail Garcia scored on an Alexei Ramirez single, and in the fifth, Melky Cabrera scored on a Jose Abreu double.

But the big story in this game was the benches-clearing brawl at the end of the 7th. With two outs and Yordano Ventura on the mound, Adam Eaton came to the plate. He wasn't a fan of home plate umpire Sam Holbrook's call, so he chirped at him a little. Ventura apparently thought that was offensive, and he quick pitched to Eaton who hit a comebacker right to Ventura. It looked like Eaton was chirping a bit at Ventura as he ran toward first, and that's where it could have ended if Ventura had acted like an adult. However, that is apparently too much to ask because Ventura yelled "F**k you" at Eaton and threw to first for the out. Benches cleared, and Jeff Samardzija got involved, throwing punches.

Samardzija seemed to be looking for Lorenzo Cain who looked like he was looking for Samardzija as well. Both players had to be held back, as did Ventura and Eaton. There was even a shot of Ned Yost trying to calm down Chris Sale.

In the end, five players were ejected: Samardzija and Sale for the Sox, and Ventura, Cain, and Edinson Volquez were ejected for the Royals. Volquez was ejected for throwing a punch at Samardzija during the brawl.

Had this been the only altercation Ventura had been involved with, it would just be a random basebrawl. But Ventura has been involved in a lot of crap already this season. So he comes out looking like a complete idiot in all of this for some stupid thing that could have been avoided.

The Sox have only played four games against the Royals this season, so this is going to be an ugly season between these two teams. Tomorrow night, Danny Duffy takes on Jose Quintana, so be on the look out for more retaliation. Hopefully we don't see any.

WSI's
Rebuilding Recap:
The Sox have had some good foundation and framework, but if they let the Royals keep getting to them, that framework will crack.
