Beckham Saves Sox

August 12, at San Francisco

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Another bullpen implosion
Can one of these guys lock down the 9th inning job? Please?

Short Take: Sox waste gem by Chris Sale but Beckham is the hero tonight in the 9th with the glove and in the 10th at the plate

Gordon Beckham was the hero tonight for the White Sox, both at the plate, where he drove in the winning run on a 2-out, RBI single in the top of the 10th, and in the field, with a web gem in the bottom of the 9th that made extra innings in this one possible. Though Chris Sale would get nothing to show for an absolutely brilliant performance, the Sox were still able to overcome their own deficiencies and defeat San Francisco, 3-2.

Sale was marvelous as he steamrolled the Giants, going 8 strong shutout innings, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 12. He was staked to a 2-0 lead early as Adam Dunn, playing right field, belted a 2-out, 2-run homer that looked to be more than enough for Sale and the Sox. Though Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong was nearly as impressive as sale (7 IP, 3 H, 5 K, 2 R), tonight's game and this recap should have belonged to Chris.

Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. With Sale sitting at 117 pitches after the 8th inning, Robin Ventura called on Jake Petricka to slam the door shut on this one and he did not. The first three Giant batters he faced, Pablo Sandoval, Michael Morse, and Travis Ishikawa, all reached on singles. With the bases loaded and no outs, and the Sox clinging to a 2-0 lead for the past three hours, Joe Panik appeared to have completed the collapse as he shot a screaming ground ball up the middle of the infield, but Beckham, diving to his left not only kept the ball on the infield but flipped it quickly to Alexei Ramirez covering second base to start the 4-6-3 double play. Though Sandoval scored, it brought the Giants to the precipice of defeat and may have single handedly swung the game back to the Sox.

Brandon Crawford did single in the tying run, but Zach Putnam, now in relief of Petricka, was able to end the inning with the score knotted, where the Sox got to work. In the 10th inning, following a walk by Jordan Danks, a sharp single and stolen base by Moises Sierra, the Sox were ripe to reclaim the lead, however, Alejandro De Aza grounded the ball directly to Panik at second, pulled in to save the run, who gunned down Danks at the plate. With two outs, it appeared the Sox might let another opportunity be squandered until Beckham ripped a seeing-eye single through the infield into left.

Putnam made relatively short work of the 10th inning, though he was aided by a great running grab by De Aza on the game’s final out. As Putnam also finished the 9th inning, he happily gets credit with the win, as the only greater injustice that could have occurred here tonight than Chris Sale getting tagged with a ND would have been Petricka "earning" the win.

The finale of this brief, two-game set will be Wednesday afternoon, as Jose Quintana will get the nod against former South Sider Jake Peavy. Game time is 2:45 PM Central time and you can catch the game on WGN.

The Futures Market:
Not much learned here tonight; Sale is awesome, offense is not good when Abreu is in a slump, and the bullpen is still terrible.
