Sox Score Runs As Chris Goes Sale-ing

July 26th vs. the Minnesota Twins

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Plentiful Harvest
The yield was abundant -- seven runs' worth.

Short Take: Chris Sale did what he does best, as the Sox win 7-0 against the forlorn Twins in Minneapolis.

COOPERSTOWN -- The White Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins. The score was 7-0.

They won on a Saturday! They looked good! Chris Sale pitched eight shutout innings and struck out 12! Can you tell I'm excited?

This is only the third time all year that they've won on a Saturday and they scored seven runs along the way. The runs were scored in productive, traditional ways. In the second, Conor Gillaspie doubled and scored on Tyler Flowers' single (1-0). In the third, Adam Eaton singled, Alexei Ramirez singled him to third, and Jose Abreu sac-flied him home (2-0). In the fifth, Beckham doubled and scored on Ramirez's two-run, off-the-foul-pole homer (4-0). In the sixth, Paul Konerko and Gillaspie singled, followed by Flowers' RBI double. Alejandro De Aza singled Gillaspie home, and Beckham got his own sac fly to score flowers (7-0).

Not bad, huh? Daniel Webb pitched the ninth and gave up no runs and victory was ours! Sale is now 10-1, and I hear those Cy Young bells a-ringin'. Clearly the home team was happily reacting to the news that their iconic progrenitor, Frank Thomas, is being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend.

Let me speak to that.

I'm reporting to you from Cooperstown, the mythical birthplace of baseball in scenic upstate New York, where legends are preserved in bronze plaques and their records are burned into carefully guarded permanance. On Sunday Frank Thomas' name will be added to Cooperstown's scroll and his likeness will be share the wall with an extraordinary minority of athletes.

I'll write more at length at a later date, but I'll say for now that as a baseball fan, the experience is both giddy and emotional. Names like Ruth, Mays, Young, and Cobb cast long shadows, and to see one of our own add his own formidable shadow to that room makes one realize why baseball animates us so.

Back to the game: Sale is an amazing pitcher, but you already know that, so I'll close here by saying that touring the Cooperstown museum and watching the induction ceremony while following a premier pitcher on my home team makes me glad to be alive.

See you at the ballpark.

The Futures Market:
If this is the future, I want to be there now. I'm buying what they're selling.
