Bad Bullpen Blows It Again

July 13 at Cleveland Indians

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Buried under a pile of manure.

Short Take: Danks pitches his butt off, Sox scrape up a few late runs, but the bullpen gives it away, again; Sox lose to Indians 3-2.

I can't stand our bullpen.

Between injuries and inconsistency, the simple job of "get guys out" seems to be too much for this crew of "pitchers" Rick Hahn has scraped together.

So after I'm done eating this bottle of Rolaids and picking up all the stuffed dog toys that I threw at my TV in the 8th inning (they were aimed at YOUR head, Javy Guerra), I'm going to celebrate the fact that until later this week, I do NOT have to watch the Sox bullpen throw another good pitching performance in the toilet.

Indians starter Trevor Bauer fooled Sox hitters with 10 strikeouts, many on a good curve ball. Although the Sox scattered 8 hits off Bauer, they couldn't string anything together to score. Conor Gillapsie's boneheaded baserunning blunder in the 2nd inning blew one of the few scoring chances. With Gillapsie on first after singling, Gordon Beckham hit a fly that was caught by Mike Aviles just over the left field foul line. But Gillapsie had gone too far to 2nd base, and seemed to be jogging back to 1st when Aviles threw him out from left field. We long- suffering Sox fans could only weep when Tyler Flowers and Leury Garcia followed up that play with singles that would have scored Gillapsie. Alas, no runs would score that inning.

Bauer only got better as the game went on, leaving the Sox with few run-scoring opportunities. Once Bauer was replaced by Bryan Shaw in the 8th, the Sox managed to scrape up 2 runs, with RBIs by Gordon Beckham and Leury Garcia.

John Danks pitched a nice game. When the Sox scored 2 runs in the 8th inning to take the lead, he was in line for the win, having only given up 1 earned run and 7 hits, striking out 4, and walking 2.

But then came the storied (hah) Sox bullpen. Javy Guerra relieved Danks in the bottom of the 8th with a 2-1 lead. He promptly walked Nick (ugh) Swisher, and then gave up a dinger to Yann Gomes. And thus goeth another White Sox lead, disappearing nearly as quickly as it came.

And because the Indians actually have a CLOSER ..

(As a White Sox fan, you might ask - What's that? Well, it's a pitcher who, you know – gets guys out in the 9th inning. On a regular basis, and without giving up runs. Yes, I know, the Sox don't have a "closer", not even a pitcher who can masquerade as a closer from time to time. But I digress.)

…their closer came in and got Jose Abreu, Adam Dunn, and Dayan Viciedo out in order.

Bright spots at the plate today were Abreu going 3 for 5 (extending his hitting streak to 7 games), and Flowers, Garcia, and Gillaspie with 2 hits each. Carlos Sanchez made his MLB debut for the Sox today, playing shortstop for the injured Alexei Ramirez, and went 0/5.

The Sox wind up the mid-season with a 45-51 record, 11 games out of first place and 7 games away from a wildcard slot.

I hope everyone has a nice few days away from bad bullpen baseball, and I'm looking forward to seeing Chris Sale, Jose Abreu, and Alexei Ramirez in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

The Futures Market:
Sell anything related to the bullpen, before they are so worthless that they're removed from the market and you're stuck with them...although it might already be too late.

Drove in the tying run and then scored the go-ahead.
"Yeah, but wasted my effort...shucks."
