Sox Burned on Runs Unearned

May 3rd vs. the Cleveland Indians

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Nothing to harvest.
The hitting crop yielded nothing. We came back with empty bushels.

Short Take:Despite Scott Carroll's solid outing, the Sox gave up two unearned runs and failed to bring home any of their own as they lose 2-0 against the Indians.

In the 1980s there was a series of commercials for the investment company Smith Barney, featuring the actor John Houseman at his imperious best. After extolling the virtues of Smith Barney's money-changing skill, his punch line was, "They make money the old- fashioned way. They earn it."

Today the Cleveland Indians beat the White Sox 2-0 in the Sox-fashion way: they un- earned it. Thanks to clumsy errors on two different plays, a dropped popup by Marcus Semien and a wild throw by Tyler Flowers, the Lake Erie Toons scored two unearned runs. And that was enough to defeat the feckless White Sox.

Too bad, because starter Scott Carroll looked good. He certainly deserved better. Not only did the Sox not make plays, they also did not score runs. The Sox were facing Justin Masterson, who had not yet won a game this year. No problem, Justin -- the White Sox are in town and have fallen back into their 2013 habits.

Carroll left today's game with an ERA of 0.68. Those earn a guy bragging rights, though I suspect he'd rather notch a win.

The Sox had their chances and let them drift away. To wit:

  • Adam Dunn led off the second with a single, but Dayan Viciedo hit into a double play.
  • In the third, Tyler Flowers got on first on an error but was caught stealing a few pitches later.
  • Alejandro De Aza led off the fourth with a single but was stranded on base three outs later.
  • The Sox had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth but Semien hit into a lineout double play to end the inning.
  • Dunn got a leadoff double in the seventh, and was thrown out when he pulled a DeAza and ran from second to third on a ground ball to the shortstop.
  • Flowers led off the eighth with a single and two outs later Gordon Beckham doubled, but Jose Abreu struck out the end the inning with runners on second and third.

Significantly, in all but one entry in that parade of futility the leadoff hitter was on base. Think the subsequent hitters could bring them home? Think a codfish could speak French?

This was a game that was winnable and it won't be the last of that kind we'll see this year. With the injuries, the erratic pitching, and the inconsistent hitting, the Sox this year are like a car rolling on bent rims.

John Houseman had another fitting quote. Addressing an underperfoming law student in the movie "The Paper Chase," Houseman's character haughtily said, "Mr. Hart, here is a dime. Take it, call your mother, and tell her there is serious doubt about you ever becoming a lawyer." After watching games like this I'm tempted to offer my cellphone to the Sox and tell them to call their mothers, because there is doubt about them becoming serious baseball players.

The Futures Market:
Sox futures look shaky right now. Recommend to hold until we see how the growing season unfolds.

Adam Dunn

Two hits today, though ran into an out on a boneheaded play. But he's as good as it gets today.
