Red-Hot Ramirez Walks Off Tribe

April 13 vs Cleveland

Daily Sox Crop Report: Healthy crop of versatile players showing they can score a lot and win, or win close low-scoring games...
But would somebody please water the bullpen? It's wilting.

Short Take:  Quintana pitches a gem, Cleto holds it, a Semien dinger giveth, and then Lindstrom taketh away – but Alexei sends fans home happy

I wish someone had warned me to take some dramamine before today's game, because it was a serious roller coaster ride, and a certain White Sox closer nearly made me lose my lunch.

As it turned out, the roller coaster ride became the fun kind, as the Sox beat Cleveland 4-3 courtesy of an Alexei Ramirez walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th.

In the rain-delayed start of the final game of this four-game set between the Cleveland Indians and our Sox, Jose Quintana and Corey Kluber kept opposing batters guessing and the scoring opportunities nearly nonexistent. Both starters weathered a second 45-minute rain delay mid-game and returned to resume the battle in the bottom of the 4th.

Quintana pitched a solid game, going 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run (a solo HR to Michael Brantley), walking 2, and striking out 6 with a career-high 121 pitches. In the 6th with the game tied at 1, Quintana got in a little trouble with runners on and no outs, but he got some help from Conor Gillapsie, who knocked down a liner and kept it in the infield. Then Q helped himself by knocking down another hard liner by nemesis Michael Brantley that was destined to score a baserunner had it gotten through, and then striking out Yan Gomes for the third time today.

Maikel Cleto pitched a solid 7th and 8th. In the 8th, Marcus Semien seemed destined to be today's hero when he hit a solo HR to put the Sox ahead 2-1. Unfortunately, his hero designation was short-lived when today's anti-hero, closer Matt Lindstrom, gave up 2 runs to the Indians in the top of the 9th.

But never fear – Alexei Ramirez is here, lurking near the bottom of the lineup like a Cuban shark. The hot-hitting shortstop, who earlier had hit safely to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, came to the plate with Jordan Danks on first base. Ramirez had seen exactly 3 pitches in his 3 at-bats to that point. Apparently not one to change what's working for him, he swung at that first pitch and sent it on a loooonnnnggg ride to the left field outfield seats. Gotta love those homer hands!

The Sox take this series with Cleveland 3-1, and improve their record to 7-6. As spring in Chicago finally seems to be moving in, the Sox continue to find ways to win and keep our hopes alive for an exciting season, despite some bumps in the pitching.

Last year's World Champ Boston Red Sox come to town for a 3-game set starting Tuesday. Erik Johnson faces ex-White Sox Jake Peavy, and features A.J. Pierzynski's first appearance at the Cell in a Red Sox uniform. (I have a strange feeling of déjà vu...). Game time is 7:10 pm.
