Starting pitching falters

April 4 White Sox at Kansas City

Daily Sox Crop Report:
Feed grain
Erik Johnson struggles in his first start of 2014

Short Take:   Erik Johnson can’t make it out of the fifth as the Sox lose their second in a row.

Well, they didn’t roll over and die. Even though the White Sox lost 7-5, the Sox managed to make a game of it, which Sox fans can be forgiven for at the very least counting as a moral victory. This is the sort of game that last year’s team would have called it quits after the second inning, so while a loss is a loss it is at least refreshing to see the Sox at least compete when they lose.

The Sox got off to a quick start with an Adam Eaton single and a double by Marcus Semien to put runners at second and third with no outs. Jose Abreu managed to bring Eaton home with a sacrifice fly, an infinite improvement over last year’s team. But the Sox still managed to score only one run. The Sox scored in the first and again in the fifth but unfortunately the Royals responded with three runs their next time at bat. Sox starter Erik Johnson employed the “fall behind every hitter” strategy, which is normally a risky one to employ but in his case it made sense since when he did throw a strike it was usually hit and hit hard.

But this year’s White Sox have shown they aren’t as eager to roll over and die as in the past. They scored four runs off of Jeremy Gutherie but then ran into the vaunted Royals bullpen, where they managed to threaten to score more runs but couldn’t quite pull the feat off. The Sox bullpen managed to keep the Royals off the board, which is a relief for Sox fans following yesterday’s loss where the bullpen did their best 2007 impression.

The Futures Market:
Buy long for long term, the Sox are showing a lot of promise and were just an Erik Johnson start away from winning today.

Adam Eaton

Nice to have a real leadoff hitter who even runts out walks.
