Axelrod Still Sucks

September 25 at Cleveland

Today's Game Rating:
Avisail Garcia had another 2-for-4 night. I like that kid.

Short Take: To the shock of no one, Dylan Axelrod gets rocked and the Sox lose another one in Cleveland.

So, White Sox hitters struck out 16 times in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians, even without Adam Dunn in the lineup. That's the bad news. The good news is well there is no good news. The Sox are sitting on 96 losses with four games to play, and there is no way you can polish this turd of a season.

At least the Sox won't be playing Cleveland any more this year. The South Siders finished 2013 with a 2-17 record against a Tribe team that probably won't be confused with the 1927 Yankees anytime soon. Would the Indians be in position to qualify for the American League playoffs if it weren't for their dominance of the Sox? Certainly not.

We can only hope Wednesday's nightmare marked Dylan Axelrod's last start in a White Sox uniform. Axelrod (4-11) was dreadful as usual, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings. The Sox were trailing 5-2 by the time Axelrod left the mound in the sixth inning. It's a miracle they weren't trailing by more. Dylan and his 5.68 ERA can take a hike. Let's all pray he isn't on the 2014 roster.

The Sox scored a run in the second inning on a 434-foot home run by Avisail Garcia, his seventh of the season and fifth since joining the Sox. Garcia is hitting .322 in 38 games since coming over from Detroit. Let's all pray he becomes the cornerstone player he looks to be. The Sox got their other run in the sixth on three singles by Alexei Ramirez, Garcia and Dayan Viciedo. At the time, the South Siders cut their deficit to 4-2, but did anyone really think they were going to come back and win this game? I think not.

I'll spare you the details of how Cleveland got its runs. The play by play is available on numerous websites, if you really care, and honestly, who cares at this point? On Sunday, this painful season will thankfully become past tense.

Until then, one more home series remains. The Sox open a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. Andre Rienzo (2-2, 5.04 ERA) gets the start for the South Siders. He'll be opposed by right-hander Jeremy "Catfish" Guthrie (14-12, 4.09 ERA). Game time is 7:10. You can watch it all on Comcast SportsNet.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
I tell you what, Stone Pony, I'm looking forward to the offseason. I'm going down to Florida to play some golf with my buddy, YAZ!
