Danks Brothers Help Secure Victory

August 25 vs. Texas Rangers

Today's Game Rating:
One star for each run scored.

Short Take: John Danks labored, but Jordan helped put his older brother in line for a 5-2 victory.

With the White Sox playing for nothing but pride at this stage of the season, it's nice to see some of the little things go right for a change. Such was the case on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field. After a walk-off win last night, the Sox looked to take the series from first place Texas and Matt Garza. Thanks to some timely hitting and an error by Craig Gentry, the Sox managed to take the weekend series by a score of 5-2.

The highlight of this contest came courtesy of the Danks brothers. John (4-10) pitched six innings of two-run ball and his brother Jordan, who had come into the game as a defensive replacement for Avisail Garcia in the fourth, hit a go-ahead homerun in the home half of that same inning. This is the first time since 1955 that one brother has helped the other while he was on the mound.

The Sox scored their other runs, courtesy of the Gentry error in the third inning, and a clutch RBI single by Adam Dunn in the sixth. Josh Phegley hit his fourth home run of the year, and second off Texas starter Matt Garza (3-2), in the seventh.

Also playing a part in this White Sox winner was the bullpen. Matt Lindstrom escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh by inducing a double play ball. Nate Jones and Addison Reed each worked a scoreless inning in relief, with Reed securing his 35th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Believe it or not, the Sox are the hottest team in the American League, having won 14 of their last 20 and eight out of nine. Who wouldn't thought?! After taking two of three from the Rangers, the Sox continue their homestand on Monday night with MLB's worst team, the Houston Astros. Andre Rienzo (1-0, 3.56 ERA) will make his sixth start in a Sox uniform and he'll be opposed by Houston's Brett Oberholtzer (3-1, 2.91 ERA). The first pitch will be at 7:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on WCIU.
