WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

No Skid Marks in Detroit on This Road Trip

August 4 at Detroit Tigers

Today's Game Rating:
Rienzo kept the Sox in it; Paul hit a long one and Dunn an even longer one

Short Take: Sox lose to Tigers 3-2 in 12, extend losing streak to 10 games; fine outing by Andre Rienzo wasted by mental mistakes on the basepaths

“I’m tired of saying what a bad baserunning team this is.” – Hawk, today in the 9th inning

Hey, in today’s game - I thought I saw a light at the end of the tunnel! Uh, oh…it turned out to be a train.

I wouldn’t have been watching this game if I didn’t need to write the Sunday TBGR. These days, I start watching a Sox game if I’m around and there’s nothing else to do. But as soon as I get mad, off it goes, and that usually doesn’t take long. Today, that would have been in the first inning, when the first of a series of bad baserunning plays happened.

But look what I would have missed had I switched it off:

  • Andre Rienzo pitched a nice game. He went six innings, gave up four hits and two earned runs, walked three and struck out three.
  • Gordon Beckham’s nice sliding back-to-the-infield catch on Prince Fielder’s fly ball in the eighth inning.
  • A lllloooonnnnnngg home run by Adam Dunn in the fourth, and he went 4/5 today. But the Sox trailed 2-1 until:
  • Paul Konerko’s game tying home run in the top of the ninth, forcing the game into extras.
  • Jordan Danks’ nice catch in the bottom of the eleventh off a deep Jhonny Peralta fly ball to save the game (at that point). Take that, Peralta…tomorrow is your day of reckoning. (Google “Biogenesis and MLB” if you don’t know what I’m talking about.)

On the other hand, here's what I also had to sit through:

  • How do you get three hits and a walk and not score? Besides bad situational hitting, you get picked off before the pitcher throws the ball. (Alexei Ramirez)
  • When your team is down a run, and you’re on third base with one out, and your teammate hits a fly ball to center field, how do you NOT tag up and force a throw? (Alejandro De Aza)
  • In the tenth inning, how do you get doubled off of second base on a soft fly ball to short left field, when it doesn’t appear to be a hit and run? (Tyler Flowers)
  • All that and more: I had to listen to that snarky wench in my head, whispering in my ear: “You know the Sox are going to find a way to blow this game. Because it *is* the 2013 White Sox.”

I hate it when that voice in my head is right. The Sox lost in 12 innings, 3-2, with a Tori Hunter walk-off single off of Dylan Axelrod. This loss to the Tigers was the Sox’s tenth loss in a row. It really does feel like they will not win another game this season.

It’s only baseball. I know, I know….there’s a lot more important things in life than baseball. But because we’re die-hard White Sox fans, let’s just allow a moment – or an hour, or a day – for us to feel sorry for ourselves. In our White Sox-centered lives, is anything sadder than our beloved team being totally irrelevant in early August?

The White Sox head home to face the New York Yankees (with or without Alex Rodriguez remains to be seen). Monday’s game is Jose Quintana vs. Andy Petitte at 7:10 pm CST.

Side note: In his first game pitching since being traded to the Red Sox, Jake Peavy left the field at Fenway last night after seven innings with a 3-1 lead and got a standing ovation as well as a win. He has to be grateful that he got traded to a winning team. Congratulations to Jake.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: (((Deep sigh.))) Stone: I think my thumb needs a few more days off.
