Sox O Sleeps, Royals Sweep; Sox Fans Weep

July 28 vs Kansas City Royals

Today's Game Rating:
Hector hung in there, and Dunn made it interesting, for a minute or two.

Short Take: Sox offer little run support and waste another decent starting pitching performance; Royals beat Sox 4-2 in extras to complete sweep.

What can I say about this game that hasn’t been said repeatedly this season? It’s same stuff, different day - the story of the 2013 White Sox season.

Hector Santiago pitched over a few bumpy spots and gave up only two runs over 6-2/3 innings. But two runs is a large mountain to climb with this White Sox offense – especially when facing Royals starter Bruce “Cy” Chen, a notorious Sox killer.

However, the Sox did manage to score two runs. Paul Konerko singled in Alex Rios in the first inning. Then with the Sox down 2-1 in the sixth inning, Adam Dunn tied the game with a solo home run (his 431st career home run, which tied him with Cal Ripken for 43rd on the all-time home run list).

Nate Jones and Addison Reed followed up with strong performances to hold the tie and take the game to extra innings.

Briefly, a glimmer of hope appeared when the Sox had the opportunity to win the game in the tenth. Pinch runner Blake Tekotte attempted to score on a single to center by Alejandro De Aza. However, Royals center fielder Jarrod Dyson played the role of spoiler by nailing Tekotte at home with a perfect throw to catcher Salvatore Perez.

Sox reliever Donnie Veal pitched a clean eleventh inning. He came back out for the twelfth and gave up a hit to – you guessed it - Jarrod Dyson, who used his speed to single when Gordon Beckham bobbled a ground ball. Dyson then used his speed to steal second. A poor throw by Josh Phegley got into center field and allowed Dyson to go to third. Phegley was charged with his first major-league error.

(I really had to stop myself from inserting multiple Dyson vacuum cleaner puns…but I have to say this: Dyson didn’t suck today.)

It didn’t matter in the end, because Veal served a fat pitch to Alex Gordon that he hit out of the park, and KC took the lead 4-2.

The Sox put up a mild rally against Royals closer Greg Holland in the bottom half of the twelfth, but as is typical for this season, could not score. Game, set, match – and the Royals broke out the brooms. The Sox scored a whopping three runs over the three-game series with the Royals.

I used to snort at people who lamented the 2013 Sox, saying “Are they ever going to win another game?” I’m starting to think that they’re on to something.

And it was fun to make the rhyming headline, but I doubt serious Sox fans are weeping. Perhaps a better description of how fans are feeling is a contagious case of apathy.

If anyone still cares, the Sox head to Cleveland for a four-game series, beginning with Monday’s matchup of John Danks vs. Zach McAllister.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: Yeah, what new...thumbs down. Dadgummit. Stone: Not that I like repeating what Hawk said, but what he said.
