Phegley Slams Tigers

July 11 vs. Detroit

Today's Game Rating:
A grand slam and a win over the Tigers? Five stars.

Short Take:   A Phegley grand slam puts Sox ahead for good

Ah another win. Watching games we actually win is obviously fun. Watching games we actually win against division rivals is more fun. Watching games we actually win against Detroit is REALLY fun. And the Sox did all that this afternoon, beating the Tigers 6-3 and taking this three-game series.

Chris Sale had a good start. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on ten hits and two walks. He did give up two home runs, a two-run shot by Matt Tuiasosopo in the second and a solo shot by Miguel Cabrera in the fifth. Sale also struck out eight. Matt Lindstrom finished off the seventh perfectly before Matt Thornton came on for a much-needed 1-2-3 inning. Addison Reed picked up his 23rd save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth inning.

The offense had another great day, as they picked up 11 hits this afternoon. Alejandro De Aza picked up three hits today, including a solo home run off Phil Coke in the eighth inning. Jeff Keppinger, Alexei Ramirez and Gordon Beckham each picked up two hits, and Ramirez batted in a run. But the one hit that made all the difference was Josh Phegley's one hit. It happened to be a grand slam off Anibal Sanchez in the sixth inning which put the Sox ahead for good.

This game would have been rather uneventful if not for the benches clearing in the sixth inning. Tempers began to flare in the fifth inning. After giving up a home run to Cabrera, Sale threw up and in to Prince Fielder. No warnings were given, Sale calmed down, and the inning ended with a Fielder strikeout. In the sixth inning, Sanchez was pulled after giving up the grand slam to Phegley and replaced by Luke Putkonen. He got De Aza out, but he threw his next pitch behind Ramirez's back. Alexei was not pleased and began walking toward the mound and shouting at Putkonen before being restrained by Tigers catcher Brayan Pena and Sox third-base coach Joe McEwing.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland came out to argue with home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild and crew chief Jeff Kellogg and went back to the dugout. When he realized Ramirez was still in the game, he came back out and continued arguing. After tensions calmed, Leyland and Putkonen were ejected by Fairchild. Ramirez finished the at-bat by hitting a single over Fielder's head and was then removed from the game after what has been announced as cramping in his right leg. Brent Morel came on as a pinch runner.

The Sox head east for their final series before the All-Star break to face off against the Phillies. John Danks takes to the mound tomorrow night and is looking for another victory. He struck out 16 and walked just three in his last 21.3 innings. He faces off against Jonathan Pettibone. He has allowed three or fewer runs in his last four starts, and he allowed one run in 5.1 innings in his last outing.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
HAWK: Two thumbs waaaaaaaaay up, Stone pony! It's nice to see some good hitting by that Josh Phegley. STONEY: Agreed, Hawk. Phegley put us ahead for good.
