New Day, New Low for Sox

July 7 at Tampa Bay Rays

Today's Game Rating:
One run means only one star is deserved.

Short Take:   Only allowing three earned runs in seven innings of work, John Danks pitched himself in position for a win, but once again, the offense let its starter down.

After getting shut out for the ninth time this season on Saturday night, the White Sox looked to somehow show signs of life at the plate on Sunday afternoon in St. Petersburg. With a lineup that featured Jeff Keppinger hitting clean-up and newcomer Josh Phegley in the five hole, Sox fans didn't have much reason to go into this game all that optimistic. As it turned out, they were right. The offense only provided John Danks (2-6) with one run of support on Sunday afternoon and the Sox lost 3-1.

The Rays scored right away in the home half of the first, as they manufactured a run by way of a double and back-to-back sacrifice outs. Up 1-0 in the fifth, Tampa added to its lead courtesy of an RBI single by Sean Rodriguez. The Sox would cut that lead in half in the next inning when Phegley hit his first Major League home run, but it wouldn't be nearly enough, as the Sox dropped the series finale and saw their overall record fall to an abysmal 34-51.

The Sox are now 10-27 in their last 37 games. Yuck! The fun never stops with this team, as they'll play a make-up game against the Cubs on Monday night at U.S. Cellular Field. Hang on to your hats, Sox fans because Matt Garza (4-1, 3.45 ERA), whom the Sox rarely hit, will be taking the mound for the North Siders, and the Sox will counter with Hector Santiago (3-5, 3.50 ERA). The first pitch will be at 7:10p CDT Monday night on the South Side, and you can watch the game on Comcast SportsNet.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
2 thumbs down. "Stone Pony, you know who never let his team reach a season-low 17 games under .500? Yaz!"
