Mastered, Again: Yet Another Loss

June 30 vs Cleveland Indians

Today's Game Rating:
Swept by the Indians at home. 'Nuf said.

Short Take: Fire Sale! I mean, here comes a Fire Sale!

Okay, so I kid about firing Chris Sale. I feel bad for him; he’s certainly a better pitcher than his record shows. Is it his fault that he has to pitch a near no-hitter every game in order to have a shot at winning?

Once again, four runs scored by the opposition proved insurmountable by the 2013 White Sox offense, especially against a decent pitcher throwing a good game. Justin Masterson threw a complete game shutout to beat the Sox 4-0, helping the Cleveland Indians nail down a sweep of the Sox at the Cell – something that, as Hawk pointed out, had never been done before in his umpteen-million years in baseball.

So add another epic-bad milestone to the 2013 White Sox list, folks. (And being snarky about this team isn’t even fun anymore; it’s just mostly pathetic and sad.)

This is not to say that the Cleveland Indians is a shoddy team. They’ve been playing good baseball. With this win and today’s Detroit loss, Cleveland is now atop the AL Central in the win column.

Today’s game was not one of Sale’s best. He gave up a couple of runs in the fourth inning. The fifth inning also started off shakily, but after Coop settled him down, he only gave up one run. Sale also threw two wild pitches today. But he struck out 10, and giving up only three runs on any other team would be enough to at least keep your team in it for the win.

Not the White Sox, though. The offense continues to be AWOL. And when they did get baserunners, the Sox either shot themselves in the foot by getting picked off (I’m looking at YOU, Alejandro De Aza), or hit into double plays (four times thru eight innings). Six hits scattered through nine innings is all the Sox bats could muster.

So when I say “Fire Sale”, I mean “expect a fire sale”. The Sox show no signs of transcending their 32-47 record, and Rick Hahn has as much as said that he will be dealing players soon.

One thing the White Sox have done right this season appears to be Family Sundays. Attendance for today’s game was listed at 27,000+. Hey White Sox, I have an idea for next year: How about fielding a team that those 27,000 attending Family Sundays can actually cheer for?

One or two items that we might consider today’s highlights are:

  • No White Sox errors.
  • Nick Swisher’s butt on the Cleveland bench.

Sox are off Monday; they face the Orioles (46-36) on Tuesday. Game time is 7:10 pm CST. John Danks (1-5, 4.68 ERA) is scheduled to face Jason Hammel (7-5, 5.09 ERA).

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: Daddgummit, this crap is hard to watch. Stone: Our two thumbs appear to be permanently stuck in the ground.
