Sox Continue to be Astro-nomically Flat

June 16 at Houston Astros

Today's Game Rating:
Third straight loss to the Astros? Seriously?

Short Take: Nothing to see here: Houston beats Sox 5-4, Sox flounder in the Battle of the Basement Dwellers

As I've watched the 2013 White Sox, I've been trying to understand the concept of "fun-bad". As of yet, bad White Sox baseball is not fun for me. I sincerely wish it was, because I would be having a lot of fun this season.

On this Father's Day Sunday, the Sox dropped their third straight game to the Houston Astros, and their fourth game in a row. Record-wise, the Astros are the second worst team in the MLB. I sure hope the Astros are enjoying making the Sox look like the worst team in the MLB.

Here's a pop quiz: Which is more painful:

A) Seeing Houston on the schedule and thinking, "Hey, the Sox could make up some ground!", then watching the Sox drop the first three games of the series.

B) Watching the Sox waste a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity - and knowing ahead of time that it would be wasted.

C) Watching Matt Thornton put yet another game out of reach with one sloppy pitch.

D) All of the above, and thank you, but I'd prefer a root canal.

In the second inning, Hector Santiago struggled with location and gave up three runs to the Astros, which felt like 30 runs - because it seems the Sox are mostly incapable of scoring.

The Sox did manage to mildly threaten in the seventh. After a Viciedo triple and a Keppinger single to score a run, they proceeded to load the bases with only one out. But this light-hitting team couldn't come through - Alejandro De Aza struck out, and then Alexei Ramirez hit a checked-swing nubber to the pitcher for the final out.

With the score 3-2 in the seventh inning, Thornton gave up a home run to Jason Castro, pretty much putting the game out of reach for this flat-as-a-pancake offense.

Then in the ninth inning, with two outs and down three runs - a glimmer of hope! De Aza homered with Gordon Beckham aboard to pull the Sox within a run. But really, did any of us believe the Sox could win this game? Even Hawk didn't sound excited about it, and he was right. Alexei Ramirez grounded out to end the game.

I can barely watch the White Sox these days. The pitching can be good, but as Sale's 14-strikeout loss showed the other day, there's no offense to support it. Apathy for this team continues to grow, and is reflected in the shrinking number of posts in the WSI game threads.

I got an email from the White Sox today that asked me to vote Sox players in to the All-Star Game. Thanks for making me laugh, Sox marketing staff! Now that is what I would call funny-bad.

On Monday, the Sox face the Astros in the final game of the series. Jose Quintana (3-2, 3.86 ERA) faces Bud Norris (5-6, 3.47 ERA); game time is 7:10 pm CST. The Sox then head to Minnesota. Hey, if they step all over the Twins, perhaps the Sox can climb out of the cellar by the end of the week. Oh, wait - where have I heard that before?

And in case you were wondering, the correct answer to the pop quiz is D).

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: I'm not on the air, so...@*%&^# ! Stone: Yes, I agree with Hawk - two thumbs down.
