Pain In The Astro

June 14 at Houston

Today's Game Rating:
1 Star
Another search party was sent to find the Sox offense and defense. It, too, went missing.

Short Take:   Things are so bad that Sale strikes out 14, gives up no earned runs, and still loses.

Same story in this one as the both the offense and defense stunk up the joint against a Houston Astros team that everyone should be beating. Chris Sale had his fastball and breaking pitches working as he pitched eight strong innings while striking out 14 and giving up two runs, of course both unearned. Those unearned runs were the difference as the Sox lost 2-1 in another pathetic game.

Should Rick Hahn just dismantle the team and rebuild? It's almost at the point where nobody cares. With nothing in the farm system, half of our starters who are either old or garbage, the options are not what you would call vast. Hawk Harrelson reminisced about the '05 World Series as the Sox returned to Houston Friday night while talking to the very likeable but also very dull Mike Huff. With only Paul Konerko, toward the end of his rope remaining from that team, it's time to look toward the future.

Anyway, I guess I should mention something that happened in the game, but it wasn't much. Erik Bedard, also a shadow of his former self, pitched for the Astros. With his fastball only reaching the upper 80's and a lollipop curve ball, he should've been a relatively easy target. However, for six innings, he had a good game plan. He pounded our right handed hitters inside and it worked. Using that strategy, he was able to overcome three walks.

The only run the Sox came in the top of the fourth. After Paul Konerko doubled, he eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Dunn.

Alexei Ramirez, whose head has been firmly planted in his Pale Hose derriere all season helped the Astros get ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Ronny Cedeno reached base on a throwing error by Alexei to open the inning. After a walk, Brandon Barnes hit another one to Alexei, who tried to force the runner at second, but he threw the ball away again for his second error of the inning. The two unearned runs in the inning turned out to be the ballgame.

Chris Sale should've been the story in this one. As the ace of our staff, he pitched great, but again and again, the Sox offense couldn't do anything against the Astros bullpen and our defense is deplorable.

Anyway, if anyone still cares, the Sox play again in Houston, today, June 15th at 6:15 p.m. John Danks (1-2, 4.13 ERA) will face former Sox pitcher Lucas Harrell (4-7, 4.52 ERA). Since we stink, anything can happen. Oh, the game can be seen on Fox to kill time until the Blackhawks start.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: "That sucked, dad-gummit. Ted Willams from the grave could hit and catch better than this." Stone Pony: "Thumbs down, I'm glad I missed this game and let Mike Huff call it with you."
