Weekend Fish Fry

May 25th vs. the Miami Marlins

Today's Game Rating:
"Bassmasters" used to be my favorite show, but I like this version of deep-sea Marlin fishing.

Short Take:A complete-game performance by Jake Peavy and a walkoff hit by Conor Gillaspie are enough to fillet the Marlins, 2-1, on the South Side.

There are as many ways to win baseball games as there are fish in the sea, though it's fun to do it the same way twice against fish we can see. The White Sox beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 on a ninth-inning walkoff RBI single by Conor Gillaspie, saving a win for complete-game winner Jake Peavy.

The Sox scored one run in the third when Alexei Ramirez reeled in an RBI by doubling home Alejandro De Aza. Though the piscary was well-stocked, the Sox mostly did catch-and-release, leaving the bases loaded in the second and two runners on in the eighth.

The Marlins were flapping their fins helplessly against Peavy for 8-1/3 innings as Jake held them scoreless. Derek Dietrich was the one that got away with one out in the ninth, casting a 1-2 slider into the right-field seats to tie the game 1-1. Though the Sox have been filling a stringer with wins in the last couple weeks, it looked like they might have put Peavy in the weeds without run support.

Dewayne Wise led off with a double in the ninth that skimmed down the third-base line like a twitching surface lure. Marlin leftfielder Juan Pierre took the bait, and since that worked so well, Conor Gillaspie cast a single in the same direction that brought Wise racing home.

The ominous cloud over this fishing hole tonight was the presence of umpire Angel Hernandez behind the plate. This series is the latest stop on his 2013 screwup tour (sorry, no T-shirts are yet available). We were all thankful that there were no high-impact calls for him to make tonight, though even the low-impact calls can be problematic when he's involved. A wobbly strike zone was the extent of his contamination.

Without any boat-rocking by myopic and belligerent umpires, by the end of the evening we're feeling good. We've found the spot where the fish are biting. Let's go back to that spot tomorrow and bag a few more.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
2 Thumbs Up! "Stoney, when I was in spring training with Yaz we'd go fishing off the coast of Florida looking for big fish." "How'd you do, Hawk?" "I tell you what, I couldn't catch a cold, but I said someday we'd be baggin' Marlins!"
