WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Served With Extra Marlin

May 24 vs Miami Marlins

Today's Game Rating:
4 Stars
Keppinger lifts Danks in extra innings with an exciting ending.

Short Take:   John Danks returned for the first time in a year as the White Sox beat Miami in extra innings 4-3.

For the first time in just over a year, John Danks returned Friday night to pitch for the White Sox against the Miami Marlins. The lefty didn't pitch too bad, earning a quality start giving up three earned runs over six innings to go along with five strikeouts. If Danks can stay in the rotation, it would be a huge lift as the Sox have had to pull Hector Santiago out of the bullpen to make spot starts in place of Floyd and Sale. Jeff Keppinger provided the biggest boost of the night with an RBI single in the 11th inning to beat the Marlins 4-3.

Danks faced off against Miami starter Tom Koehler as each pitcher kept the game scoreless through the first three innings.

In the top of the fourth, with one on, Marlins second baseman Derek Dietrich took Danks deep to put Miami up 2-0.

The Sox broke through in bottom of the fifth with an RBI groundout by Jeff Keppinger. Filling in for the anemic Tyler Flowers, Sox catcher Hector Gimenez tied the game off of Koehler with an RBI single to score Conor Gillaspie.

After the Sox went up 3-2 in the sixth on an RBI single from Paul Konerko, Miami responded in the top of the seventh. Danks allowed a double to Marcell Ozuna to open the inning. Matt Lindstrom came in to relieve and eventually allowed Ozuna to score on a sac fly by Miguel Olivo to make it 3-3.

The game stayed that way into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, the Sox threatened after Keppinger singled and Gimenez was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded and one out, Alex Rios hit into an inning-ending double play. However, replays showed Rios was safe at first and first base umpire Angel Hernandez completely blew the call. I'm not sure how this guy has a job in Major League Baseball and isn't bagging groceries somewhere. What could've cost the Sox the game, fortunately didn't.

In the bottom of the 11th, Paul Konerko and Dayan Viciedo both singled. Tyler Greene came in to pinch run for the turtle-like running of Konerko. The hard .210 hitting Jeff Keppinger then stepped up to the plate and knocked in Greene with the game-winning single for a Sox winner!.

The Sox will try to win their second in a row on Saturday, May 25th. Jake Peavy (5-2, 3.31 ERA) will face Ricky Nolasco (3-5, 3.96 ERA). The game starts at 6:15 p.m. and can be seen on FOX.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: "Thumbs up Stone Pony Baloney. Danks coming back was nice to see." Stone Pony: "If Danks can stay healthy, he'll be much needed piece to the pitching puzzle. Both thumbs up."
