It Helps to Hit Home Runs

May 1 at Texas

Today's Game Rating:
5 stars
Beggars can't be choosers. Any win is five-star right now.

Short Take: Conor Gillaspie and Alejandro De Aza go deep to spark a 5-2 White Sox winner in Texas.

White Sox fans have wished for a more balanced offense for years now, but the reality is this: When the Sox hit home runs, they usually win. When they don't hit home runs, they usually lose.

On Wednesday, the Sox got some long balls late in the game and that was the difference in a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers.

With the score tied 2-2 going into the top of the seventh inning, the Sox solved the mystery of Texas starter Nick Tepesch (2-2). Conor Gillaspie's solo home run to right-center put the South Siders ahead 3-2. After a Tyler Flowers single and a couple of outs, Alejandro De Aza added a two-run blast down the line in right field that accounted for the final score.

That offensive support made a winner out of Chris Sale (3-2), who survived a rocky second inning. The Rangers collected a home run, three singles and a walk in that inning, but scored only two runs because former Cubbie Geovany Soto made a baserunning mistake -- failing to score from second base when Ian Kinsler hit a Sale pitch off the left field fence.

After that, the Sox left-hander settled in and allowed only two more baserunners over the next five innings. He went seven innings with seven strikeouts, allowing the two runs on six hits.

Jesse Crain allowed two hits in the eighth, but got out of trouble with a little help from Matt Thornton. Addison Reed worked a scoreless ninth for his ninth save in as many tries. Reed did create some controversy by plunking former Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski with a pitch with two outs and nobody on in the ninth. Reed then gave up a single to Kinsler, allowing the tying run to reach the plate, before striking out Elvis Andrus to end the proceedings.

With the win, the Sox snapped a three-game losing streak and evened this three-game series at a game apiece. Jake Peavy (3-1, 3.38 ERA) pitchers for the South Siders in Thursday night's rubber match. He'll be opposed by right-hander Justin Grimm (2-0, 1.59 ERA). Game time is 7:05. You can watch on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
HAWK: I'll tell you what, Stone Pony, you know who likes a good intentional beanball in the ninth inning? YAZ! STONE: Hawk, right now I'd like to drill you in the ribs. That said, TWO THUMBS UP!
