WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Matt Moore, Bat Less

April 27th vs. the Tampa Bay Rays

Today's Game Rating:
1 STAR Some credit should be given for scoring four runs, but that's about it.

Short Take:The Sox looked overmatched tonight against Tampa Bay ace Matt Moore, losing 10-4 on the South Side.

I watch games like this and in my fevered mind I imagine a pre-game conversation in the clubhouse:

"Hey, who's pitching tonight?"

"Matt Moore. Left-hander. He's 4 and 0 in 4 starts."

"Oh...I guess we're not hitting tonight, huh?"

"I guess not."

And sadly that's the way it went. Matt Moore made the White Sox look like overcooked pasta as the Tampa Bay Rays pecked away and beat the Sox 10-4. Moore only went six innings but had nine strikeouts in that time.

These are your 2013 White Sox in all their flaccid glory. Gavin Floyd started, and started badly, giving up a two-run homer to Ben Zobrist in the first. Then he got hurt and was taken out in the third inning with an elbow strain. Hector Santiago came in cold to eat up innings and did not distinguish himself, yielding four more runs and ten more hits in 3-2/3 innings of work.

Donnie Veal pitched 1-2/3 innings and handed over two more runs, setting it up for Matt Lindstrom to allow another pair of runs. When the smoke cleared the Rays had colected 10 runs on 19 hits. Everybody into the pool!

The Sox stayed out of the pool -- they hardly got damp. The one run Moore gave up was an opposite-field homer by Adam Dunn in the fourth, which also was the Sox' first hit of the night. The Sox did get three more in the eighth off reliever Kyle Farnsworth, which was entertaining but was too little too late.

Moore is now 5-0 on the season. He's a good pitcher, and our caps are appropriately tipped, but it's easier to be a good pitcher when you're facing the current edition of the White Sox. Exciting and competitive they're not.

In contrast, Gavin Floyd is now 0-4 and seems to have a gift for giving opposing teams confidence in their hitting. We don't know yet how long his injury will keep him out. We can only hope he uses that time productively to study the art of pitching.

Tomorrow the Sox face another left-hander, David Price. I can only imagine tomorrow's pre-game conversation. I know what mine will be.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Two thumbs down! "But you know Stoney, those Rays have got the will to win. TWTW! I think I'll have that embroidered on my pajamas!"

Hit a home run tonight. Provoked some fireworks. That's something.
