Greene With Envy

April 26 vs Tampa Bay

Today's Game Rating:
4 Stars
Tyler Greene and Jake Peavy led the way as the Sox held on for victory.

Short Take:   Jake Peavy overcame a shaky start while getting support from three Sox homers as we hung on to win 5-4.

On Friday night, Jake Peavy didn't have his best stuff early, but he battled as the Sox came back from an early deficit to earn the win. Recently called up Tyler Greene hit one of three Sox homers on the night to catapult the offense. Even Adam Dunn, who had eight hits on the season coming into Friday night, had a multi-hit effort. Don't look now, but the Sox have won three in a row after their 5-4 win on Friday night over Tampa Bay.

Peavy cruised through the first two innigs but ran into trouble in the third and fourth innings. In the top of third, Matt Joyce hit a solo shot to put the Rays up 1-0. In the top of the fourth, Tampa Bay tacked on two more runs. Evan Longoria hit a solo homer to right before Kelly Johnson's RBI single to make it 3-0 Tampa Bay.

The Sox got in the board in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Rios reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Adam Dunn knocked Rios in with an RBI single. I know, I was just as shocked to see that as you were.

The Sox bench mob would put is ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Backup catcher Hector Gimenez took Tampa Bay starter Roberto Hernandez deep to right for a solo homer to cut their lead to 3-2. After a De Aza single, recently called up Tyler Greene hit a two-run bomb to center off Hernandez to give us the lead 4-3.

Conor Gillaspie would add an important run for us in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to right off of Hernandez.

In the top of the ninth, Addison Reed was called upon to give everyone a heart attack. After allowing a one-out double to Jose Molina, Matt Joyce singled in Molina to cut the Sox lead to 5-4. Reed got Sam Fuld to pop out but then walked Ryan Roberts to put two men on. Fortunately, Reed got Ben Zobrist to strike out on a check swing to preserve the win.

The Sox play the third game of their four-game set with Tampa on Saturday, April 27th at 6:10 p.m. Gavin Floyd (0-3, 4.98 ERA) will face Matt Moore (4-0, 1.04 ERA). The game can be seen on CSN.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: "Thumbs down to Sabermetrics, and B&B, but thumbs up to a Sox win! Yes!!" Stone: "Jake battled and the Sox offense did their job, thumbs up."
