Peavyís Strong Start Snaps Sox Skid

April 14 at Cleveland Indians

Today's Game Rating:
Solid pitching and a little long ball snaps a 5-game losing streak

Short Take: †Peavy punches out Indians, while Konerko and De Aza launch the long ball; Sox avoid a sweep.

Totally Biased White Sox fans breathed a sigh of relief when Jason Giambiís flyout to Alejandro De Aza in the 9th marked the end of the Soxís five-game losing streak. By beating the Cleveland Indians 3-1, the Sox can finally quit being the answer to this embarrassing trivia question: "Which team is the only team that has not yet won a road game this season?" And I can stop wearing a bag over my head - at least for the near future.

It didnít look like a promising start for Jake Peavy when leadoff hitter Michael Bourn took Peavyís first pitch out of the ballpark. Itís possible that the collective groan emanating from Sox fans in Chicago wafted up into the jetstream and back down into Cleveland, drowning out the 11,000 fans in Progressive Field. Fortunately, that pitch was the only major mistake Peavy made. He continued on to stymie Indians hitters, striking out 11 and allowing five hits and no walks through seven strong innings.

Facing former White Sox pen man Brett Myers, the Sox scattered five hits over the first five innings but were unable to put anything together to scratch across a run. Finally, in the sixth inning with two outs, the Sox made something happen. Adam Dunn walked and Paul Konerko took a 3-1 fastball out of the park for his second home run of the season. De Azaís solo home run in the eighth added an insurance run. Yes, I know...the Sox hit way too many of those darned dingers. Today, Iím grateful for them.

The Sox now head to Toronto to face the Blue Jays, including former White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. Mondayís game will be the first time Buehrle has faced his old team since he signed as a free agent with the Miami Marlins for the 2012 season. Buehrle, who has had a rough start to the 2013 season (0-0, 10.24 ERA in two starts), will face Gavin Floyd (0-2, 5.56 ERA). Monday 4/15 game time is 6:07 CT.

On a side note, my dentist and I wish to personally thank Robin Ventura for not asking Alexei Ramirez to bunt in the third inning with a runner on and no outs. Teeth-gnashing is not good for my pearly whites.

Hawk and Stoney's Thumb Guide:
Hawk: Thumbs up for stoppin' the skid, even if we only know how to win by puttin' it on the board...Yes! Stone: Thumbs up for a stellar pitching performance by Peavy, and especially for the win - so I donít have to get on the plane with a sulking, I mean, Ken.
