WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Fade to Black

October 1, at Cleveland

Today's Sox Crew:
Chicago Folding Co.

If you need to fold like a lawn chair, we're your guys!!!

Short Take: Offense awakens in 11-0 blowout in Cleveland, but it proves ultimately pointless as Tigers win in Kansas City to clinch division, complete Sox September choke

The Tigers beat Kansas City tonight 6-3 about an hour and a half after the Sox/Tribe went final, 11-0 in favor of the Beloved.  So with the champagne flowing and cigars burning in the visitor's locker room at Kauffman Stadium, the Tigers and their fans can pat themselves on the back and talk a big game how they won Central in 2012 and earned their second straight date with October.  Any astute observer of the American League over the last few weeks will know this to be bull**** as the Tigers benefited from a brutal September collapse by the Sox, who did more to lose the division than the Tigers ever did to earn it.

Only two week ago, the Sox had taken a pivotal make-up game from Detroit putting themselves up by 3 games with a scant 2 1/2 weeks to play.  And then the bottom fell out as the Sox, as I'm sure you know, have gone a robust 3-10 in the last 13, watching the Tigers blow past them playing respectable, but not devastating baseball, now 10-4 since that fateful Monday in Chicago, which means yes, if the Sox just could have played .500 ball, the division would still be a dead heat with 2 to play.  Instead, Detroit gets to rest and await the winner of the East this weekend while the Sox get to look forward to another off-season of uncertainty, bitterness, and dissapointment.  When it rains, it pours.

As for the game, Hector Santiago officially announced his candidacy for the Sox starting rotation, pitching 7 strong innings allowing a single hit and walking 1 while punching out 10 against this lineup of mostly has beens and never will be's.  The star of the night at the plate is Dayan Viciedo, I guess, who cranked out his 23rd homer of the year, a grand slam in the 9th that put moved the game from garbage time to GARBAGE time.  Overall, it was a nice day for the Sox offense, as they abused  Corey Kluber in 5.2 innings of work, a week after Kluber landed one of the many body blows that ultimately knocked the Sox out of the playoffs.  The Sox got positive contributions from Dewayne Wise (2-6, 2 runs), Adam Dunn (2-4, 1 run, 2 RBI, and a walk), Paul Konerko (2-4, a run, RBI, and walk), and A.J. Pierzynski (2-4, 2 runs and an RBI) aside from Viciedo.  It was the kind of game the team had played so well earlier in the season, except that instead of feeling like another mark in a potential run at destiny, it was merely meaningless theater.

The Sox and Indians meet tomorrow night for the 2nd game of this series.  Jake Peavy is set to take the mound for possibly (likely?) the final time as a member of the White Sox, facing off against Justin Masterson.  Game time is 6:05 PM Central time .  Game will be on Comcast Sports Net... If anyone still cares.

See you in 2013.  Winter is coming.

KW Appreciates The Game:
Have fun rebuilding this roster, Rick.
