That Ended Badly

Short Take:   Royals take out Sox in the ninth

The White Sox looked to increase their lead in the AL Central in the season finale against the Royals, but unfortunately that didn't happen. The Royals pulled out a win in the ninth, beating the Sox 4-3.

Pitching tonight left a lot to be desired. Francisco Liriano went five and a third innings, and he gave up three runs on four hits and a walk. Nate Jones allowed one of those runs to cross the plate in the sixth, and that run tied the game. He pitched 2.1 innings and gave up just the one hit. Donnie Veal pitched the last out of the eighth inning and was excellent as usual. Jesse Crain picked up the lost, allowing a hit and a walk. The hit crossed the plate when Matt Thornton came on and gave up a hit.

Unlike last night when there were a couple stand out players, no one really stood out tonight. Only AJ Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez had more than one hit (they each had two), and Dan Johnson was the only player to pick up a walk. The Sox got to Jeremy Guthrie early, but a few bad baserunning mistakes cost the Sox the potential for more runs and the win tonight.

The Sox stay two games up on the Tigers since they lost big to the A's this afternoon. The Tigers host the Twins this weekend, so hopefully the Twins can pull something out and help the Sox out. The Sox have a magic number of 12 now.

The Sox head to Anaheim to take on the Angels. Jake Peavy takes the bump for the Sox tomorrow night. He's been having a great September, going 2-1 in three starts with a 3.06 ERA this month. He looks for his 12th win this season as he faces off against Ervin Santana. The Angels have done well in his last eight starts, going 6-2 while Santana compiled a 3.10 ERA.
