Flying Solo

September 18 at Kansas City

Today's Sox Crew:
Demolition Team
A couple of Sox bombs were just enough to sink the Royals ship.

Short Take:   Gavin recovered and a couple of Sox solo home runs took down KC 3-2.

As winners of five in a row and seven of their last ten, the White Sox are surging at the right time. Monday's make-up game win over Detroit was huge as the Sox took a three game lead into Kansas City on Tuesday night. Typically, playing, or especially going into Kansas City would be some kind of death knell for the Sox. However, they needed to put that behind them and just win games against teams they should be beating. Gavin Floyd started Tuesday night for the Sox. After a shaky start, he settled down and the White Sox held on for a nice 3-2 win.

Alejandro DeAza put the Sox ahead in the top of the first with a solo homer to right off of Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar.

Then the typical Kansas City garbage started in the bottom of the first. Floyd walked some guy David Lough to start the inning, which is never a good thing. Alex Gordon followed that with a double to bring up Billy Butler. KC's best hitter did it again with a bloop two-run single to right to put the Royals up 2-1. Fortunately, Floyd would keep the damage there.

Both Floyd and Hochevar settled in an kept things quiet until the top of the sixth. The streaking Gordon Beckham, who's hitting around .310 over the last month, took a Hochevar offering over the left center field fence for a long solo homer that tied the game 2-2.

The Sox went ahead to stay in the top of the seventh. Alex Rios took Luke Hochevar deep to left for the third solo homer of the game to put us up 3-2. It was a towering shot down the line that measured 424 feet.

Gavin Floyd pitched seven innings of two run ball throwing only 78 pitches in the process to earn the win. That ran Floyd's record to 10-10 on the season.

Suddenly reliable Matt Thornton pitched 1.1 scoreless innings before Addison Reed closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth.

On Wednesday, September 19, the Sox will send Chris Sale to battle Cy Chen for the Royals. This will be a good chance to win the series since the seemingly unhittable Jeremy Guthrie will be pitching for them on Thursday. The game starts at 7:10 p.m. and can be seen on WCIU (The U!).

KW Appreciates The Game:
"Last year, Dunn had his appendix taken out in KC. This time, I wanted to take the heart out of KC."
