WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Happy Homecoming

July 23, vs. Minnestoa

Today's Sox Crew:
Paul, Adam, and Alex's Bomb Squad
If you're going to score all your runs via the long ball, you may as well hit a couple

Short Take:  Konerko, Dunn, and Rios go deep as Sox snap losing streak by pounding hapless Twins

Following last week's disastrous trip to Fenway Park and a humiliating sweep at the hands of the now-1st place Tigers, it was understandable that many Sox fans saw the name Liriano in the Twins' projected pitcher slot for the day and had their trepidations.  After all, this is the same Francisco Liriano who had no-hit the Sox in May of last year and was responsible for one of two Twin wins over the Sox so far in 2012.  Apprehensive?  Understood.  Except, you all forgot one thing:  Francisco Liriano sucks.  The streaky, oft-terrible pitcher reared his ugly head again and this time, he was the muse the cold Sox bats' needed as they tagged him for 7 runs on 7 hits in less than three innings in support en route to a 7-4 win.

Hopefully this game acts as a slump-buster for a number of players, none more important than Paul Konerko, whose 3-run bomb in the 1st inning gave the Sox they'd ultimately never relinquish.  It was his first homer since June 29 and was a harbinger of things to come from a team that's scored more than 4 runs only twice since returning from the All-Star Break.  Adam Dunn and Alex Rios each jacked 2-run homers in the third to chase Liriano only 8 outs into his start and staked Gavin Floyd to a 5-run lead that even he couldn't blow.

As for Gavin, he was shaky, but effective in his first start off the disabled list.  He needed 99 pitches to get through 6 innings, allowed a rare unearned run when he allowed a run to score on a wild pitch, and issued six free passes, but also got the ground balls when he needed them, as the Twins grounded into five double plays on the night, which mostly kept their offense in check. Hey, if you're going to have an off-night, it may as well be against a team as crap-ass as this.

If there's one downside on the night, it was the the Sox offense vanished as soon as the Twins bullpen got into the action.  Notable terrible pitchers Brian Duensing and Alex Burnett held the Sox scoreless the final 5.1 innings, allowing only 3 hits over the final 5+ frames.  The Sox bullpen, was on tonight, as Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain, Brett Myers, and Addison Reed combined to pitch the final 3 innings, allowing a meaningless solo home run but otherwise holding down the win.

With the win, the Sox pick up 1/2 game on the idle Tigers, who got a day of rest after beating up on the White Sox this weekend before heading to Cleveland.  The Sox and Twins will play game 2 of this three game set at the Cell tomorrow night, as well, with Jose Quintana on the mound against Cole De Vries.  First pitch is at 7:10 Chicago time and the game can be seen on Channel 26, WCIU, the U!

KW Appreciates The Game:
KW appreciated the head's up from his offense that maybe he doesn't want to trade for this ****ty pitcher.

Sox Clubhouse "Pick to Click" Winner

Paul Konerko

Hit a 3-run homer in the 1st to set the tone for his offense. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
