Youk Goes Green

July 17 at Boston

Today's Sox Crew:
Youk and the Sox offense built a lead and held on at the end.

Short Take:   Kevin Youkilis' 3-run homer is the difference as the Sox hold on to beat Boston.

Much of the White Sox trip to Boston this week centered around the return of Kevin Youkilis for the first time since he was traded. Constant questions about him being called out by Bobby Valentine in spring training continue to surface. For that reason alone, it will be nice when this series of behind us. Youkilis responded nicely though, with three hits in the Sox Monday night loss. With Gavin Floyd sent to the DL with elbow inflammation, recently activated Phil Humber was asked to step in his place Tuesday night. After a shaky start, Humber settled down and helped the White Sox to a 7-5 victory.

The White Sox drew first blood in the top of the first. Kevin Youkilis drew a one-out walk and scored on a Paul Konerko double to put us on the board. An RBI single by Alex Rios made it a 2-0 White Sox advantage.

Boston tied the game off of Humber thanks to RBI singles from Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez.

With the White Sox up 3-2 in the top of the fourth, we would add more. Viciedo led off with a ground rule double. After Gordon Beckham walked, Bobby Valentine chose to roll the dice and pitch to Kevin Youkilis. He made the wrong decision. Youkilis lined a 3-run homer over the Green Monster off of Boston starter Jon Lester to put us up 6-2.

Alejandro De Aza notched his second RBI of the game with a single that scored Alexei Ramirez in the sixth inning to make the score 7-2. Matt Thornton was eventually summoned to pitch in the bottom of the eighth, and he did his best to almost screw the pooch.

Thornton allowed singles to Carl Crawford and Will Middlebrooks before Kelly Shoppach homered off of Thornton to all of a sudden bring Boston within three at 7-5.

However, Addison Reed retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his 15th save.

The night belonged to Youkilis and Humber. Youk continued to blast his former team with the bat and Humber came in and pitched a nice game filling in for the injured Gavin Floyd. Humber allowed only two runs over six innings to get the win and even his record at 4-4.

Game three of this four-game series is Wednesday, July 18 at 6:10 p.m. White Sox rookie Pedro Hernandez will make his first start against Felix Doubront (9-4, 4.41 ERA) for Boston. You can watch on CSN.

KW Appreciates The Game:
"Kevin Youkilis looks like my A/C repair guy, but hits like Babe Freakin' Ruth."
