Based On Balls

July 8 vs Toronto

Today's Sox Crew:
Habitat For Humanity
The Sox provided plenty of lumber, unfortunately, they also let Toronto build freely on our own territory.

Short Take: † Walks killed the Sox as Toronto took the finale Sunday 11-9.

First, the good. The Sox won the weekend series and scored nine runs today, coming back everytime Toronto put runs up on the board. And we're heading into the break in first place. The bad? The Sox had their five-game win streak snapped as Sox pitching allowed nine walks, using five pitchers. Because of that, even with all the offensive output, the Sox fell to Toronto 11-9 on Sunday afternoon.

Dylan Axelrod was asked to pitch on three days rest, pitching in place of Chris Sale whom the Sox decided to skip in order to give their All Star pitcher extra rest. Pitching on short rest showed as Axelrod struggled. Dylan (0-2) ended up only going three innings allowing six hits, seven runs, two walks, four strikeouts while allowing three homers.

The damage started in the top of the first when Colby Rasmus and Edwin Encarnacion each hit two-run homers to stake Toronto to a 4-0 lead.

The Sox came back in their half of the first. After a De Aza double and a walk to Youkilis, Alex Rios launched a three-run bomb to bring the Sox back within a run at 4-3.

It would be a back-and-forth contest the whole game. Over the next three innings, Toronto would add to their lead. A run scoring double by Colby Rasmus and home runs from Kelly Johnson and Jeff Mathis would put Toronto up 8-3 by the end of the fourth.

In the fifth, the White Sox would continue to pound Toronto starter Brett Cecil. De Aza opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch. After Kevin Youkilis singled, Adam Dunn grounded into a fielder's choice to score De Aza. Alex Rios continued his hot hitting by hitting a two-run double later in the inning to cut the Toronto lead to 8-5. That would knock Cecil out of the game. Toronto reliever Jesse Chavez came in and allowed a two-run triple to Alexei Ramirez to put the Sox back in the hunt at 8-7. Cecil went 4.1 innings and was charged with six earned runs.

Things would get ugly in this crazy game for the Sox again in the top of the sixth. The base on balls was killer. Sox relievers Brian Omogrosso, Leyson Septimo, and Nate Jones each walked a batter as Toronto scored three times that was capped off by an Adam Lind double made it an 11-7 Blue Jays lead.

Once again, newly acquired Kevin Youkilis has been an absolute stud. Youk doubled in the sixth to score Alejandro De Aza to pull the Sox within 11-8.

Unfortunately, a Dayan Viciedo sac fly in the seventh to score Alex Rios would be as close as we would come, just falling short 11-9.

All in all, a great first half from the Sox, all things considered. Most experts thought we'd suck in 2012. Not so! Paulie, AJ, Dunn, Peavy, Sale, Rios, De Aza, and new third baseman Kevin Youkilis have led the Sox to first place at 47-38 with hopes October baseball on the south side.

KW Appreciates The Game:
†"Kevin Youkilis looks like my A/C repair guy, but hits like Babe Freakin' Ruth."
