July 4 vs. Texas

Today's Sox Crew:
Metal Grinders
The Sox manufactured a win by grinding out some at-bats. As we reach the 81-game mark, the rebuilding job is half done.

Short Take: Kevin Youkilis delivers an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Sox to a 5-4 win over Texas.

Somewhere, White Sox general manager Kenny Williams is smiling. His recent acquisition of third baseman Kevin Youkilis has come up aces so far, and you need not look any further than Wednesday night's game to see the latest example. Youkilis came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Sox to a hard-earned 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Youkilis finished his evening 2-for-4, and since joining the Sox on June 25, he has gone 11-for-36 with a home run and nine RBIs in nine games. More importantly, the Sox have a record of 6-3 in those nine games - including a 4-2 mark against New York and Texas, the American League's two best teams.

With the game tied 4-4, Alejandro De Aza led off the bottom of the 10th with an excellent at-bat against Texas reliever Mike Adams (1-3). He battled back from an 0-2 count to work a walk. Up stepped Youkilis, who also fell into an 0-2 hole. But the veteran refused to give in, fouling off several pitches and eventually working the count to 2-2. In the meantime, De Aza picked up his 15th stolen base of the season to get into scoring position. Finally, Youkilis got a pitch he could handle from Adams and drove it into left-center field to give the Sox a walk-off victory.

The Sox bullpen also deserves kudos as four relievers combined to work 4 1/3 scoreless innings against a loaded Texas lineup. Closer Addison Reed (2-1) worked a 1-2-3 top of the 10th to pick up his second victory of the season. The Sox also received solid work from Nate Jones and Matt Thornton, who retired all six men he faced.

Sox starter Dylan Axelrod labored in the 100-degree heat, allowing four runs over 5 2/3 innings. The Rangers jumped on him for three runs in the top of the first inning. Fortunately, the Sox had an answer - coming up with four runs in the bottom of the second. Dayan Viciedo and Alexei Ramirez had RBI singles, and Gordon Beckham added a two-run double. On the Ramirez single, A.J. Pierzynski bowled over Texas catcher Mike Napoli on a play at the plate to score a run and cut the Sox deficit to 3-2. Moments later, Beckham's drive put the South Siders ahead 4-3.

The lead would last only until the next half-inning as Josh Hamilton homered off Axelrod in the third to square things up at 4-4. There the score would remain until the 10th inning when Youkilis sent the crowd of 30,000-plus home happy.

The Sox have now taken the first two games of this three-game set against the two-time defending American League champions. They'll go for the sweep Thursday afternoon behind left-hander Jose Quintana (3-1, 2.19 ERA). The hitters will have their work cut out for them as they will face Texas all-star lefty Matt Harrison (11-3, 3.16 ERA). Game time is 1:10, and if you don't have to work, you can watch on WGN.

KW Appreciates The Game:
I'm a ****ing genius for acquiring Youkilis. Hey Cowley! How's your boy Ozzie doing in Miami?
