Bad Gavin Returns

July 1 at New York Yankees

Today's Sox Crew:
One-man wrecking crew
Floyd. Not good.

Short Take:   Bad Gavin returned once again, this time giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings and walking five.

The whole Good Gavin/Bad Gavin movie is one Sox fans have seen all too frequently throughout Floyd's career. After a solid start in Minnesota earlier in the week, Gavin's teammates turned to him Sunday afternoon to aid them in taking three of four from the hated Yankees. The return of Bad Gavin, combined with swinging at bad pitches, led to the Sox dropping this one 4-2 in New York.

The Sox got off to a good start off Phil Hughes (9-6) with Alejandro De Aza doubling to start the game and Kevin Youkilis following with an RBI single. Youk went to third on Adam Dunn's ground out and with two out, Alex Rios singled, driving home Youkilis and giving the Sox a quick 2-0 lead.

After watching Gavin Floyd (6-8) get into the bases-loaded nobody-out jam in the home half of the first, it quickly became apparent that two runs would not be enough for the Sox if they wanted to win this ballgame. By some miracle, Floyd escaped the jam unscathed and the Sox retained their two-run lead. The next two innings, Floyd continued struggling with his control and effectiveness, allowing two two-run home runs -- one to Eric Chavez in the second and one to Robinson Cano in the third -- and giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead and eventual victory.

Coming in to Sunday's game, Floyd had been unscored upon in his previous two outings, debunking the theory that Floyd has been nothing but hot garbage this season. However, today he proved once again that a lot of his problems on the mound occur because of what's going on between his ears.

After Sunday's loss and victories by both Cleveland and Detroit, the Sox lead in the A.L. Central drops to 1 1/2 games. However, they left Chicago with just a 1/2 game lead last Sunday, so it was a successful 4-3 road trip. After an off day Monday, the Sox return home to U.S. Cellular Field for six of their nine home games in the month of July. All-Star Chris Sale (9-2, 2.27 ERA) will take the ball for the South Siders and he'll oppose Texas newcomer Roy Oswalt (2-0, 4.26 ERA). The first pitch will be thrown at 7:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

KW Appreciates The Game:
What a lousy game! At least we're sending Sale, Konerko and the Big Donkey to K.C. for the All-Star Game....
