Sox Sweep Themselves to 1/2 Game Out of First Place

May 27 vs. Cleveland Indians

Today's Sox Crew:
Demolition Crew
Ths Sox were a nine-man wrecking crew Sunday, scoring 12 runs and pounding out 15 hits.

Short Take:   Gavin Floyd was hot garbage, but somehow managed to qualify for the victory.

After scoring 23 runs in the first two games of their series with the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field, I'm quite sure no one thought the Sox had another double-digit run attack in them. But as it turns out, the Sox bats were as hot as Sunday's weather, pounding out 15 hits and scoring a dozen runs, doubling up the Indians 12-6 on Sunday afternoon.

The Sox got right to it on the offensive end, scoring three runs in their first at-bat off Cleveland hurler Ubaldo Jimenez (5-4), highlighted by RBI singles off the bats of Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez. With the Sox up 3-0 early on the Indians, Gavin Floyd (4-5) went to work in the second and allowed the first five hitters to reach base. Courtesy of two singles, a double, home run and a hit by pitch, Cleveland came right back and plated three of their own, tying the game at three a piece. The Sox went ahead 4-3 in the third, but Floyd gave it right back in the fourth.

With the game now tied at four, the Sox got back to business in the home half of the fourth inning, plating three more runs. This inning was highlighted by hot-hitting Paul Konerko's 400th home run in a White Sox uniform, giving him 406 for his career. After that, the Sox would never look back, adding three more runs an inning later, courtesy of back-to-back triples off the bats of Orlando Hudson and Alejandro De Aza. Having chased Jimenez earlier in the fifth, the Sox continued their offensive attack on Cleveland's bullpen. With the score 10-4, the Sox added two more in the home half of the eighth, thanks to a two-RBI single off the bat of Dayan Viciedo.

Floyd was hot garbage, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in just five innings of work. Fortunately, the bullpen stepped up on this 96-degree afternoon. Will Ohman and Nate Jones combined for three innings of scoreless relief, and Hector Santiago, while successful in keeping the Sox victorious, did allow an RBI double off the bat of Jose Lopez. With Sunday's victory against the Indians, the Sox move to 8-4 against Cleveland on the season, which is the primary reason the South Siders now find themselves just 1/2 game out of first place in the division.

After Sunday's sweep of Cleveland, the Sox now head to Tampa for a three game series against the Rays, which begins with a Memorial Day matinee. Chris Sale (5-2, 2.50 ERA) will take the ball for the South Siders and he'll oppose Tampa Bay's Matt Moore (1-4, 5.07 ERA). The first pitch will be thrown at 2:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Net.

KW Appreciates The Game:
A Sunday victory and a series sweep all completed at home?! These are things to be appreciated!
