WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Thanks, Thornton

May 4th at Detroit Tigers

Today's Sox Crew:
Explosive Planters
Peavy, Beckham, and company did well to hold down the Tigers, but Thornton planted the explosives in the wrong place, and caused a disastrous implosion.

Short Take: Peavy holds down the Tiger offense and Beckham had a great game, but Matt Thornton inexplicably is tabbed to close the game out and, of course, fails to.

Ugh. Seriously, ugh. Come on, Robin, this one's on you. The fact that you tabbed Matt Thornton to pick up the save in this game shows that you need work on your bullpen-handling skills. Now you have a 5-4 walkoff loss to show for it. He of the career sub-50% save conversion rate? You wanted HIM to close it out?? You had Addison Reed, the so-called "Closer of the Future" at your disposal! Give Reed a chance, at least he might not blow it!! Hmm, this wall looks real punchable right now... *deep breath*...Let's get to the highlights, shall we? Believe it or not, there were some.

Jake Peavy got the start for the South Siders in this one, and after a rough first couple of innings, settled down and pitched a little less than what he's been doing, but he still went 7.1 strong innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. Gordon Beckham, Public Enemy #1, actually was the reason the Sox got so far as to get walked off, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run bomb in the seventh. But of course, that didn't matter because of Thornton's "heroics".

Thornton came in in the 8th to get the final out of that inning, retiring Prince Fielder. He then came out to try to get the save, protecting a 4-3 lead. However, the damning stat is the fact that he is 21-for-46 in save opportunities, which is what I would call a trend. Thornton retired the first batter of the ninth, and then Alex Avila (who had homered earlier off Peavy) got a base hit to put Jah-hahn-ee Peralta at the plate. Gerald Laird would come in to pinch-run for Avila, but as it turned out, all he needed to do was trot, as Peralta crushed an 0-2 fastball out of the park to win the game for the Tigers and make a winner of the Dancing Monkey, Jose Valverde. At least we were spared his grunting and chest-pounding routine. So, 21-for-47 now for Thornton...can someone please read this stat, and tell me if this is what passes for closing success these days?

The less I dwell on this crap, the tomorrow, Gavin Floyd will get the start against Detroit's Max Scherzer. Let's try NOT to blow any more ninth-inning leads, okay? If Jose freaking Valverde can save games, why can't anyone on the Sox seem to do it!? *deep breath* Good night, WSI...and just win baby or something like that.

KW Appreciates The Game:
I appreciate that we got to see what a walk-off win looks like. Must be nice...
