Third Time's Not a Charm

July 17 at Detroit

Levels Finished:
Detroit barrels knocked out the Sox offense in the later innings.

Short Take:   For the third time this season, the Sox can't overcome the mystique of Brad Penny.

Tigers pitcher Brad Penny has been bad to mediocre so far this season with his ERA ranging somewhere between 4.50 to over 5 for the majority of the first half. No matter, this is the Sox offense we're talking about. Brad Penny ran his record to 3-0 against the Sox this season after giving up three earned runs in 6.2 innings Sunday afternoon against the Palehose. Sox starter Phil Humber didn't have his best outing in going 5.2 innings and giving up four earned runs, along with seven hits, a walk and eight strikeouts. Those four earned were enough for the Tigers as the Sox couldn't score in the later innings as they lost 4-3.

All of the Sox runs came in the second inning off of Penny. Adam Dunn doubled and Carlos Quentin walked to open the frame. Alex Rios then hit the second double of the inning to score Dunn. An AJ Pierzynski sacrifice fly followed by a Gordon Beckham single would plate both Quentin and Rios to put the Sox up 3-0 after two.

As has happened many times this season, the lead did not last. With the score 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers would chip away. Andy Dirks doubled off of Humber which was followed by a Magglio Ordonez walk. They both would eventually score on a Victor Martinez two-run single. The Tigers would go up for good when Carlos Guillen singled in Martinez to make it 4-3.

Not much else to say about this one besides the fact the Sox blow on Sundays. Ozzie didn't even use his "Sunday" lineup as all the regulars were in except for Morel. Some positives are that Adam Dunn went 1-4 with a run and both Rios and Beckham were 2-4 with an RBI a piece. Please keep it up, at least for the rest of this road trip as the Sox really need it after taking a monster dump before the All-Star break.

The Sox need to get back to .500...again. They travel to Kansas City on Monday, July 18th to play the Royals. Mark Buehrle (6-5, 3.42 ERA) will face Kyle Davies (1-8, 7.74 ERA). We should be hitting moon shots off this guy, but I've been wrong before with this team....many times. Game starts at 7:10 p.m. and is on Comcast SportsNet.

Ozzio's Game Rant:
"Floreeda Marlin beat Cubs good dis weekend. Then I had dream I coach there and I look sexy in Marlin uniform."
