Rochester Red Wings embarrass Sox

June 15 at Minnesota

Levels Finished:
Screw this team.

Short Take: The Twins farm team mows down the Sox in Minneapolis.

I've always said you could take 25 fat guys out of the Aurora Municipal Beer League, stick them in Minnesota Twins uniforms and they would beat the White Sox handily.

That theory was put to the test Wednesday night when the Twins trotted out half the Rochester Red Wings' roster at Target Field. Ben Revere, Luke Hughes, Brian Dinkelman, Matt Tolbert, Jason Repko, Drew Butera. Yeah, that's a solid squad, yet they still managed to beat the hopeless White Sox 4-1.

It's one thing if you lose to a team that features Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Denard Span, Jason Kubel, Jim Thome and Joe Nathan. All those Minnesota regulars are on the DL and nowhere to be found. Doesn't matter. All that matters is that Dinkelman and The Gang were wearing Twins' unis.

Believe it or not, the Sox actually walked the fearsome Dinkelman intentionally in the eighth inning of this game. That might have been the low point of the entire season right there. Afraid of Brian Dinkelman. Wow. They also allowed noted speedster Michael Cuddyer to swipe three bags, thus doubling his season total from three to six. This game also featured some good ol' fashioned Walkerball, as the Sox bounced into four double plays against erstwhile Minnesota pitcher Carl Pavano (4-5).

The right-handed Pavano had only induced two double-play grounders COMBINED in his previous 13 starts this season. No matter. He sailed through the Sox lineup, tossing a complete-game six-hitter. Brent Morel's RBI single in the sixth inning accounted for the only South Side tally.

Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd (6-6) also tossed a complete game, but a three-run Minnesota rally in the third inning did him in. The great Revere and Alexei Casilla hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0 Twins. After Cuddyer walked, he and Casilla executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Delmon Young hit the prototypical grounder with eyes to put Minnesota ahead 3-0. Ballgame. There was really no need to watch the final six innings.

Oh, the Sox did give us a tease in the top of the ninth. Down 4-1, Juan Pierre singled and Alexei Ramirez doubled to place runners on second and third with no outs. But Carlos Quentin struck out and looked bad doing it. Paul Konerko lined right back to Pavano, and A.J. Pierzynski grounded out to third to end the misery. Way to come through, guys.

The Sox (33-36) will conclude this rain-abbreviated series with a day game Thursday. Left-hander Mark Buehrle (6-4, 3.95 ERA) better throw a shutout. Because I'm sure the Sox hitters will make Nick Blackburn (5-4, 3.47 ERA) look like the second coming of Tom Seaver. Game time is 12:10. If you can tolerate any more of this garbage, the game will be shown on Comcast SportsNet.
