WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Travesty in Toronto

May 29 at Toronto Blue Jays

Levels Finished:
The Sox actually deserve a big fat goose egg, but they did manage to score four runs....

Short Take:   John Danks was dreadful, Lucas Harrell wasn't much better and the offense was its usual pitiful self.

Memorial Day weekend 2011 will be anything but memorable for the White Sox, as they dropped three of four north of the border this weekend. Most recently, they embarrassed themselves 13-4 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Still winless on the season, John Danks (0-8) only made it through four innings Sunday afternoon. The nine runs on nine hits that he surrendered were the most in an outing for Danks this season. This one got ugly quick. Ahead 1-0 early on, courtesy of Carlos Quentin's 13th homerun of the season, that slim lead evaporated in no time. Danks couldn't find the plate, but when he did, his pitches were on a tee for the Jays, who sent ten men to the plate, six of whom scored. The "highlight" of the inning was a grand slam by Aaron Hill. Edwin Encarnacion followed the slam with a solo shot of his own, giving the Jays a commanding, insurmountable 6-1 lead.

An RBI single by Paul Konerko in the top of the third off Ricky Romero (5-4) gave the Sox their second run of the ballgame, but it wasn't nearly enough, especially since Toronto just kept scoring. Corey Patterson -- yes, that Corey Patterson -- continued his assault on Sox pitching this series, hitting his second homerun in as many days. With the score 9-2 in favor of Toronto, things were basically hopeless for the Sox. They got worse an inning later when Lucas Harrell, recalled from AAA Charlotte to replace Tony Peņa on the roster, gave up three more runs. The method in which Toronto scored didn't really matter at this point, but just know it was Corey Patterson -- again -- who delivered a clutch hit. The lone good news from this hot mess is that Harrell ate up some garbage-time innings and saved the bullpen after Saturday's 14-inning game.

With the score 13-2 in the ninth, the Sox added their typical late-inning, meaningless runs. Ramon Castro was the guy responsible for the two runs the Sox scored, as he hit his second homerun of the season. The final was an abysmal and embarrassing 13-4 defeat at the hands of the Jays. With Sunday's beat down, the Sox have now dropped 22 of their last 27 against Toronto's ballclub; that's a .185 winning percentage for those of you scoring at home.

With a 2-5 record on this ten-game road trip thus far, the Sox now head to Boston to begin a three-game series at Fenway Park on Monday night, which will conclude a string of 20 games in as many days for the White Sox. Jake Peavy (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will face off against Boston's Jon Lester (7-1, 3.36 ERA) on Memorial Day. Peavy's teammates sure have their work cut out for themselves! The game begins at 6:10P.M. CDT and you can watch it on Comcast SportsNet.
