WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Out of the Cellar

May 9, at Anaheim... er, Los Angeles

Levels Finished:
Where have these guys been all season???

Short Take:  8-run offensive output + 7-inning shutout performance by Edwin Jackson = Good times on the South Side

Take those paper bags off your heads, Sox fans, your Beloved are no longer the worst team in professional baseball!  The Sox erupted for 8 runs, Edwin Jackson was brilliant, throwing 7 innings of shutout baseball, and the Twins' loss to Boston earlier in the evening propelled the Sox to 4th place in the Central Division following their 8-0 win over the Angels.

At the dish, the player of the game was Carlos Quentin who went crazy in his homecoming to Southern California, 3-4 with a pair of doubles, a 3-run homer, and 5 RBI total.  Quentin alone had a hand in over 1/2 the Sox's offensive output and provided more than enough for Jackson who in retrospect had this game sewn up in the 2nd inning after Gordon Beckham put the Sox up early after blasting a laser beam over the right field wall for his 3rd home run of the season.

Though his line reads great; 7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 K, it wasn't all easy for Edwin, but he found ways to pitch out of occasional trouble, with a little help from his defense.  After the Sox took a 2-0 lead, the Angels looked poised to storm back in the game, putting the 1st two batters of the inning on base, but the old flyout to CF turned 8-5 double play ended the threat as Alex Rios gunned down Alberto Callaspo at third.  In the 6th, with the Sox up 4-0 now, the Angels again threatened, with runners at 1st and 2nd for Torii Hunter, but Edwin beared down and got the ground ball forcing a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. The Sox tagged 4 runs on Ervin Santana and Trevor Bell courtesy of a lead-off homer by Alexei Ramirez and Quentin's 3-run bomb that turned Monday's game into a laugher.  Easy innings from Chris Sale and Will Ohman preserved the shutout.

Hopefully the Sox saved something in the tank for John Danks, who will start Tuesday night against Joel Piniero, as he still looks for his 1st win of the 2011 season and the Sox look to extend their season-long 3-game win streak.  And the big news, Jake Peavy will make his first start of the year in the series finale Wednesday.  Both games start at 9:05 PM Chicago time and games can be seen on Comcast Sports Net Tuesday and nationally on WGN Wednesday.
