This Just In:  Matt Thornton Sucks!

April 11 vs. Oakland

Levels Finished:
4 1/2
Sox come tantalizingly close to before the bottom drops out

Short Take:  Thornton keeps his perfect season alive, blowing his 3rd save in a week, as A's rally past Sox 2-1 in 10.

It was no surprise that Monday night's Sox/A's game was a pitcher's duel from start to finish.  After all, it was the 21st game in Major Leaguer history featuring a pair of starters with perfect games on the resumes, as Mark Buehrle and Dallas Braden matched each other pitch for pitch for most of the night.  However, the story again in this short season was the ineffectiveness of Matt Thornton, now 0/3 in save opportunities as he (aided by a key Juan Pierre error) helped erase a 1-0 lead in the 9th as the Sox eventually lost a heart breaker to Oakland, 2-1.

It'd be easy to lay much of the blame on Juan Pierre (and don't think I'm letting you off the hook, you dirty Frenchman).  His egregious error in the 9th when he apparently lost a fly ball in the moon (???) directly lead to the tying run that sent this game into extras.  But Thornton was classic Bad Thornton again.  Juan Pierre didn't roll a batting practice slider into Andy LaRoche's wheelhouse.  And the only reason Pierre was able to make such a gut-punching error was because the screaming 9,000 MPH line drive Coco Crisp tattooed off Thornton somehow wound up in Paul Konerko's mitt.  So yeah, Pierre had WHAT THE HELL, MAN? performance, Thornton had another brutal, and increasingly common, night on the hill.

And it's too bad, as Mark Buehrle shined.  Don't tell me you weren't counting down the outs to that no-hitter until Kurt Suzuki singled in the 6th to break up history.  Buehrle needed only 99 pitches to shut the A's down over 8 innings, striking out only one but inducing seemingly nothing but weak ground balls and harmless pop flies.  His counterpart, Dallas Braden, was nearly as brilliant, no-hitting the Sox into the 4th, but he was finally tagged for a run in the 5th when Brent Lillibridge made the most of a rare start, homering to left to give the Sox a 1-0 lead.  Frankly, that looked like all Buehrle would need.

But alas, rather than give his ace an early season opportunity for the complete game shutout, Ozzie instead opted to try and give the bullpen some work and much needed confidence, and alas, his plan imploded in front of him.  Matt Thornton's going to need to check into a Psyche Ward with the way this week has gone, and Jesse Crain take the loss in the 10th after serving up a solo home run to Suzuki that barely cleared the fence and landed, fittingly, in the Sox bullpen.

So that's what?  3 games we've pissed away in the first 2 weeks?  Obviously, this team has a lot of talent, but a discouraging trend is emerging as the bullpen continues to be an anchor dragging on this powerboat of a team.  Sure, there's 152 games left to figure it out.  Somebody give me a reason to believe they will.

Edwin Jackson will be given the task to right the ship tomorrow night, as the Sox host the A's for the 2nd of the 3-game set.  21-year-old right Trevor Cahill will oppose him.  First pitch is at 7:10 PM Chicago time, and the game will be broadcast on WCIU, Channel 26 the U!

Ozzio's Game Rant:
If I have to watch Matt ****ing Thornton one more ****ing time, I'm taking a god damn bat to my TV.
