Floyd Stings the Rays

April 10 vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Levels Finished:
Paul Konerko was jumping barrels like hurdles by launching two homers and Gavin Floyd avoided fireballs like he was dodging bullets by going 8 stellar innings.

Short Take: Paul Konerko continues to bring the lumber and Gavin Floyd sparkled as the Sox won both the finale and the series Sunday afternoon against the Rays.

The weather was very summer like Sunday afternoon as temperatures reached into the 80's. The White Sox took advantage by taking out the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1 in the finale of this four game series. In doing so, not only did the Sox take three of four from Tampa Bay this weekend, but it also put the Rays off to their worst start in their history at 1-8. Not good for the defending AL East Champions.

Gavin Floyd got the start today and was looking for his first win of the season after getting a no decision in his last start against the Royals. The Rays countered with Jeff Niemann, who came in 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in making his second start of the season. Without the seemingly unlimited money of their division counterparts, this is not the same Rays team we've seen in recent years. This is coupled with an injury to star third baseman Evan Longoria.

However, today I don't think it would've mattered whether it was the 2010 or 2011 Rays offense that showed up. Gavin Floyd was just flat out dealing today. Maybe the Rays were just mourning the sudden retirement of Manny Ramirez, but I highly doubt it. Floyd went eight "Cy Young" like innings, scattering four hits, eight strikeouts, and allowing only one unearned run.

After holding Tampa Bay scoreless in the top of the first, the Sox got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first. Gordon Beckham got the scoring started with a solo home run to left to put the Sox up 1-0. The Sox quickly went up 2-0 when Paul Konerko hit his own solo homer to left.

The Sox forced the issue again in the bottom of the 2nd. After Mark "Teatime" Teahen reached on an error, he was knocked in on a Brent Morel double to make it 3-0. Juan Pierre then singled in Morel to make the score 4-0.

With Floyd cruising, the Sox continued to pour it on in the bottom of the third. After Rios and Konerko reached base via the walk, AJ Pierzynski singled in Rios to make it 5-0. This chased Jeff Niemann from the game after only two and two-thirds of work with five earned runs.

The Sox finished their scoring for the day in the bottom of the fifth when Paul Konerko launched his second homer of the day to put the Sox up 6-0.

The Rays got their only run of the day in the top of the sixth. Sam Fuld, who had earlier doubled, scored on a throwing error by Gavin Floyd.

After eight innings of domination, Gavin Floyd's work was done. Ozzie decided to use Tony Pena in the ninth to finish out the game. Normally, I'd be nervous seeing Tony Pena coming in to finish a game, but we were treated to a pleasant surprise when he got the Rays to go down in order to secure the Sox 6-1 victory.

The Sox open up a new series at home against the Oakland Athletics on Monday, April 11th. Mark Buehrle (1-0, 7.36 ERA) will be opposed by Dallas Braden (0-1, 6.43 ERA). The game starts at 7:10 p.m. and can be seen on Comcast SportsNet.

Ozzio's Game Rant:
"With Gavin, when deez kid gets the curveball over, no %&&(?*& team can hit him."
