Triple Play Spells Trouble

April 3 at Cleveland Indians

Levels Finished:
The Sox dodged the rolling barrels early, but ran into a fireball known as a triple play in the fourth, sucking the life out of the offense.

Short Take:   John Danks pitched well and the offense scored early, but neither were enough for the series sweep.

After starting the season 2-0 for the first time in six years, the Sox were looking to make it win number three in as many games at Progressive Field in Cleveland Sunday afternoon. Things looked promising with John Danks on the mound and the offense having scored 23 runs up to this point. However, the offense took its usual Sunday slumber, and since John Danks didn't pitch a shutout, the Sox found themselves on the wrong side of a 7-1 ballgame.

The turning point in this game came in the fourth. With the Sox up 1-0, they had Justin Masterson (1-0) on the ropes with runners on first & second and nobody out. Inexplicably, Ozzie Guillen called for the sacrifice bunt with Alexei Ramirez at the plate. Ramirez, a notoriously slow starter, butchered the bunt attempt to the extreme. Carlos Santana, normally Cleveland's catcher, ran from first and made a diving catch on Ramirez's bunt attempt, then proceeded to double A.J. Pierzynski off first for the second out. But alas, the Indians weren't done, quickly realizing a triple play was staring them in the face. A throw to second base tripled off Carlos Quentin, who was nowhere in the vicinity of the bag. End of potential rally, end of life for the White Sox on the afternoon.

The game got away from the Sox in the sixth when Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run shot off Danks (0-1). With the score 2-1 in the seventh inning, Ozzie went to Will Ohman, who didn't have it for the second straight outing. Between Uh-Ohman, Philip Humber and Matt Thornton, the Indians scored five runs off the Sox bullpen, handing the South Siders their first defeat of the 2011 campaign.

After an off day in Kansas City Monday, the Sox open up a brief two- game series with the Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday night. Gavin Floyd (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the mound for the Sox and he'll oppose Kansas City's Luke Hochevar (0-1, 4.76 ERA). The first pitch will be at 7:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

"How many times I tell dees keeds, 'Get the #%^&*$! bunt down!'"
