September Swan Song

September 18th against the Detroit Tigers

Nancy Faust
Chris Sale

Nancy, we'll miss you next year: you give us reasons to laugh when the team makes us growl. Chris, you need to throw more than fastballs: they get hit really hard.

Short Take:The listless White Sox sink deeper in the Central Division, losing 6-3 to the Tigers.

The games go on. The season must be completed. Tickets have been sold, plans have been made, and those whose livlihood depends on an open ballpark need to make a living. But the games themselves have become academic. We all know they're just exercises now, a sad retreat toward the end of the calendar.

The White Sox, though not officially eliminated from postseason contention, are not going to win a championship this year. A lot of ink has been spilled and a lot of bandwidth expendend as to why this has come to pass, but let's save it. That's what the hot stove league is for in the dark winter months when baseball isn't with us.

They did play today and looked flat again, losing against the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on a cloudy afternoon in Chicago. Rookie Lucas Harrell started for the Sox and went five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits. Not good, not bad, and no decision. Harrell gave up two quick runs in the first on a couple of walks, a double and a single, but hey, he's a September rookie call-up. He settled down until the fourth, when he gave up another run off three more hits. 3-0 Tigers after four.

The Sox did tie the game in the fifth, hitting three doubles, a single, and drawing a walk off Detroit starter Justin Verlander. A good feeling for a couple of innings until the top of the eighth. In that frame the Tigers scored three more after Sergio Santos gave up a couple of singles. He was replaced by Chris Sale, who yielded a three-run homer off the bat of pinch-hitter Scott Sizemore. Advantage Detroit on the pitcher/hitter matchup -- so what else is new in the waning days of this disappointing season? That made it 6-3 in the eighth, and that's how it would stay.

The only bright spot today was the celebration of organist Nancy Faust's 41 seasons with the White Sox. She started in the gruesome season of 1970 when the Sox lost 106 games, provided the sound track for the rollicking Veeck years of the late '70s, accompanied us through the up-and-down stretch of the 1980s and closed down Comiskey Park in 1990. She welcomed us to the new ballpark in the '90s with the wit and sass of her mood-appropriate keyboard, and led us all in song as we sat moist-eyed watching the World Series champions take the field in 2005. And all the while her smile and her gracious manner has been a constant. She's retiring after this season and I can't think of anyone more deserving of our gratitude and affection.

Thanks, Nancy. It's after games like today's that we appreciate all over again how you can give us something to smile about.

TBGR Diary:
A dreary ballclub on a dreary day. Nancy deserved so much more at her final-season sendoff.
