King Konerko Kills It

August 19 at Minnesota

Mark Teahen
Mark Kotsay

Teahen went 3-for-4 and batted in two runs. Everyone played well, but Kotsay was the only starter without a hit, and he left seven on base.

Short Take:   Konerko's big night helps Sox avoid sweep in Minnesota

After back-to-back 7-6 losses, the White Sox looked to bounce back with a win against the Twins and avoid the sweep. The Sox sent ace Mark Buehrle to the mound to face Carl Pavano and his moustache. The Sox got to Pavano, who left after six-plus innings. Buehrle pitched seven innings of shutout ball, and the Sox avoided the sweep, winning by a score of 11-0.

The Sox started the game off well, as Juan Pierre and Omar Vizquel hit back-to-back singles. Alex Rios grounded out to third, scoring Pierre. After Paul Konerko singled to left and moved Vizquel to third, Mark Teahen singled to right and scored Vizquel. More runs scored in the third inning. Konerko led off the inning by singling to center. Teahen tripled to center, scoring Konerko. With two outs, AJ Pierzynski came to bat and hit a double to center, scoring Teahen.

The Sox made a great defensive play in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Michael Cuddyer doubled to right. Delmon Young was the next batter, and he reached on an error by Alexei Ramirez. However, Cuddyer tried to score from second and was caught in a rundown because of a heads-up play by Gordon Beckham.

Up 4-0 in the fifth inning, the Sox tacked on another run via a Konerko solo shot to left center. To lead off the seventh inning Rios and Konerko hit back-to-back singles. Since Rios advanced to second on a throwing error by Danny Valencia, he was able to score on Konerko's single. Ron Gardenhire pulled Pavano in favor of Glen Perkins who proceeded to give up singles to Teahen and Ramirez before getting Kotsay to ground into a force out with Konerko out at home. Pierzynski grounded out to third, scoring Teahen, before Beckham struck out on a foul tip. At the seventh inning stretch, the Sox lead by an impressive score of 7-0.

But the scoring wasn't over. Pierre was hit by a pitch to lea off the eighth inning. Vizquel singled to left, and Rios popped out to second on the infield fly rule. Konerko doubled to left, scoring Pierre and Vizquel. After Andruw Jones flied out to center, Ramirez homered to left, scoring Konerko. Ozzie pulled Buehrle in the bottom of the eighth for JJ Putz. After getting Denard Span to fly out to right, Putz hit Orlando Hudson with a pitch. (Finally.) Joe Mauer flied out to left, but Putz walked Michael Cuddyer before pulling himself out of the game with knee pain. Tony Pena came on and walked Jason Repko to load the bases, but luckily he was able to get Jason Kubel to fly out to right. Bobby Jenks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, and the Sox won the game 11-0.

The Royals play host to the White Sox this weekend. Edwin Jackson goes to the hill for the White Sox, and Sean O'Sullivan goes for the Royals. You can catch the game on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10pm.

TBGR Diary:
That was a beautiful, beautiful game. And it's just what we needed after those close losses the past two nights. Watching Paul Konerko score from first on that Mark Teahen triple made me giggle. That was hilariously awesome. I love Paulie.
